new mom day 57 can't get comfortable I can't seem to figure her out. she is going to have 7 pups per xray done on day 49. her temp at the vet was only 100.0 and she gets so tight and seems to be breathing heavy from time to time. she didn't have a stool yesterday for almost 24 hours it worried me. she is eating puppy food with cottage cheese. I was adding shredded beef roast with her kibble and adding water to make a broth and I warmed it for 40 seconds in the microwave. she liked that 3 times a day for 2 weeks. Now so she can sleep she is laying on her side on the floor all stretched out. she isn't breathing funny any more. I have whelped bigger dogs before and they weren't mine. this time I can't stop being nervous. she looks like she is caring around a soccer ball. she has to follow me everywhere, up and down the stairs. I have noticed a discharge but it has been a mucous-watery consistency from clear in color to yellowish-light red. she is urinating at least 3-5 times a day, but she has been doing great with holding it and going big time when she would finally go. she heads for under my bed when she sees the thermometer. her temp has been 99.7 for over 2 weeks now. I am so anxious about having these puppies. day 63 won't be till May23. |
Hi, welcome to YT! Sounds to me like she's got good reason not being able to get comfortable. Seven babies is alot to carry around (how big is the mama, normally), so I'd say she's acting pretty normally. Don't let her sneak under that bed and have her babies there! I've had just one litter (so far); I know how anxious we can get those last weeks and days before whelping. You've got just one more week to go (maybe less), (maybe more;);sorry had to put that in there), but those babies will be here before you know it! Good luck........I'll be watching for the happy news. |
Congrats on your upcoming babies! This is just part of the pregnancy. I have only whelped 1 litter..but this sounds exactly like Fancy! Fancy was so miserable and she started being really miserable in her 6-7 week. She had 6. I try to look at it like me..wouldn't you be miserable if you had 7 in you. Fancy started having discharge in her 3rd week...so that is completely normal...I don't know about the reddish in it, maybe someone experienced will help you out on that. Good luck in your upcoming litter...sounds like you will really have your hands really soon. |
Princess is due on May 23rd as well, and has 6 pups according to the X-ray. She is very uncomfortable and her temp is 99.8 and has been for a couple of days. When it drops to around 98, I will know it is time. This is her 3rd litter. |

Day 59 her temp is 98.5 and has been since sunday evening around 8pm and no signs of contractions. she is still eating. she just can't get comfortable. I love feeling the puppies move around, angel enjoys her belly being rubbed. |
We had our puppies today on day 60. Angel had 7 girls are smalles is 3.8 oz, and her biggest is 5.5 oz. theya re nursing well and she is really a great first time mom. she has several inverted nipples but I shaved the hair off and she the pups have latched onto them and are bringing them out to where they can get a hold. I know she has a retained placenta even after getting an oxytocin injection at noon from the vet. I have food and water in their with her. she has had a ravenous appetite after whelping the pups. All are doing well and are all sleeping on a tit right now. |
 OMG, 7 little girls, how lucky is that, :congrats: Oh Momma is going to have her little paws full, hope she is getting plenty of calcium, and hope she passes that retained placenta with no problems, maybe someone can give you some advice with that sounds like it could be a real issue. Hope all goes well, post pics soon, we all love to see lots of pics! :D |
That is so great that Angel had her babies. Seven girls, wow!! What did your vet say about the retained placenta? Did he give you any time guidelines to follow if she doesn't pass it soon? Congrats girl. Well done. |
Wow 7 girls.. How great is that! I had 7 boys once, lol I was just going to post that don't expect her to go 63 days with that many in there, when I noticed she had whelped. Good Job! Keep up that cottage cheese and a little milk replacement twice a day wouldn't hurt. |
Angel passed one about 8pm and the other at 10;45 I am glad . She keeps panting though I am not sure what that is all about. I keep giving her water. The pups have been latched on almost always. I can give her milk or puppy supplement milk? |
Yes, milk replacement will give Calcium and give her some much needed weight to replace that sunken look after such a big litter. I give 1/3 cup twice a day. She may be panting from being hot. Do you have her on a heating pad or heat lamp? Watch her for Low Calcium.. her temp will spike if she is low on Calcium, among the other signs. Good Luck! |
Oh my goodness... what a lucky girl you are.. 7 little girls.. it does not get any better then that.. congrats on the big litter.. I am so excited for you..keep us updated and pictures...anne |
I have a heating pad in the whelping box for tonight . I had it in the other end of the box. she went right to it at about 11pm and stretched out over it. she also tried to tear up the bedding and cover up the pups. she had left the whelping box and jumped into a clothes basket, and waited till I changed the towel I had in her box and then she went back into it. she ate at least 3 tablespoons of cottage cheese and took 1/2 of the calcium tabs. ate 4 small bowels of food. She had 2 retained placentas till 8pm and 10pm this evening . she had her first pup at 7:14am and the last at 10:40 am. I am going to turn off the heating pad and turn on a small fan heater to blow at the top of the whelping box. I don;t think she has anything coming out of her tits. I haved tried to gently express them or milk them and I don't get a dribble of anything at all. |
That all sounds good. Just be sure the fan/heater doesn't make the box too hot as they puppies won't be able to get away from it like they can on a heating pad. Puppies can dehydrate really fast. Personally, I just use the heating pad in one-half of the bed so they have the option to be on it or off it. Good luck |
But if I turn on the heating pad she lays right down on it. she was panting like crazy last night. she didn't even do that during labor. Were do I find the signs of eclampsia in a dog. I thought that could only occur before the pups came, not after? she is good at letting the pups all latch on at least 5 can nurse somewhat easily without her having to go onto her back. There are a couple of puppies that like to dig in under her to the tits she is laying on. I have a 1 cc syringe I have been trying to put alittle of supplement in the sides of their mouths inbetween along with karo syrup. I have a very thin pipette, I don't have a eye dropper. I bet they could almost suck the fluid out of it without much trouble. I thought they could do that with the syringe. Maybe they are just tooo young yet. all of them lost a couple of tenths from their birth weight. The heater sets on a table next to the whelping box about 2 feet off the floor. I have it blowing warm air over the whelping box. Hurray Angel passed her placentas last night. she no longer has a black discharge. |

The panting isn't just from being hot. She is making milk like crazy and that raises her body temperature. If the heating pad is only on 1/2 of the bed area, she can get off it and lay on the cooler side if she wants. Let her choose. The heat is really necessary to keep the puppies warm, as you know. Petco, and other pet stores have a baby bottle set with nipples, etc. If you can get one of those, put the nipple on the end of the syringe. After the puppies have nursed, if their tummy is not round and full, let them suck on the nipple, and VERY SLOWLY push a little supplement into the nipple for them to suck out. Make sure the supplement is warm like mom's milk, but not too hot. Put the little guys on the teats closest to mom's tail. They have the most milk and are easiest to nurse from. Anyone who is losing weight should be given private time to nurse. Take the bigger puppies out and put in a warm box, and give the tinies their own chance to nurse. When they are done you can add the other puppies back in with mom. I weighed all puppies 2 times a day, and weighed the tinies every time I supplemented them (before and after) about every two hours, day and night. Pretty soon they will all get good at the nursing and you won't have to monitor them so much. You are one lucky lady having 7 girls!! My goodness. What a little family. |
:eek:Wow.........7 girls! That is amazing! Congratulations! When everything is settled, we'd love to see some pictures of the new family.:p |
the puppies have been growing and doing well. Mom still doesn't have much of an appetite. I have a time getting the calcium to her she needs. I can get her to eat only one time a day. the diarrhea continues. Everyone went to the vet today. Dew claws and tails docked. Mom stayed in the basket awaiting each puppy to have their turn and be returned to her. I had fecal test done just to make sure nothing was in it. It came back negative, they do a float test. I feel relieved. I have one puppy spoken for and my brother said ,"Can I have one." He fell in love with my dogs at christmas when we visited. Yorkies are contagious everyone just falls in love with them. |
