too early to wean?
 
pebbles pups are 3 1/2 weeks old now... theyll be 4 weeks on saturday. the past couple days they have changed so much! attempting to run, wrestling with eachother. and i keep catching them with their heads in pebbles bowl of kibble. i took the kibble out of their pen cause im afraid theyll get a peice in their mouth and choke cause they dont have teeth yet.

is it too soon to grind up some kibble and mix it with some water or formula for them?

whats the youngest you've started to wean?

I can't think of the exact age I've started, but its about that time...when they start acting interested in moms food its time to start on the mush

go ahead and grind it up. If they are interested thats a good sign.

When the pups 3 1/2 to 4 weeks old I just grind the dry puppy food in a blender and put out a small bowl of ground up dry food and a small bowl of water. It sounds like they are ready. You still want to let them keep nursing on mom as long as she is willing. Her milk should slowly dry up as they start eating more of the dry food.

This may be a silly question, but if puppies are kept till 12 weeks at least, why do they start weaning so early?? Seems the longer they nurse, the better, like people.

The weaning process should be slow. By allowing the pups to start eating solid food around 4 weeks it takes some of the burden off the mom, especially if it is a big litter. The mom will slowly dry up as the puppies eat more solid food. I always allow my females to nurse as long as they want. Some of mine start snapping at their pups at 6 weeks when the pups try to nurse and other moms might let them nurse for 8 or 9 weeks even though they have very little milk by then. Momma dogs in the wild start weaning their pups by regurgitating food for them when they are very young. Some of my Yorkie moms will also do that for their babies.

I dont understand why one would wean this young unless the bitch is in need to lessen the load. Yorkies are so small to begin with they need the teat longer ...mine are not weaned until 6 weeks at earliest since I keep them until 12 weeks or longer, there is no hurry and their better off because of it IMHO.

I'm not weaning mine. I wish Allie would feed them more...
But they now have teeth and she but all refuses , I even try to hold her down and she growls at them. So I started them on mush Monday.
Because I just know they're not getting what they need.
But I think the longer mama feeds them the better.
Edited to add Allies puppies were 5 weeks old Sunday

Mine are by no means weaned at 4 weeks, I just start introducing them to ground up dry food at that age so it is available if they want it. They just start licking it and eat small amounts the first week or so. I just feel if a bitch is trying to nurse 4 to 6 puppies, it is asking to much of her and I try to help. With small litters, 1 or 2 pups, it is not usually necessary to start them that early.

thanks for everyones input! i will offer them some ground up food if they want it.

i dont at all wanna completely stop them from nursing this young, but they do seem very interested in the food. so if they want to eat that as well they can, but if they dont want it no big deal, mom is still around and willing to nurse.

:thumbup: I agree. Brooke's still nursed until she was dry, up to 8 weeks, all 5 of them.

It's okay to start on puppy food (gruel of some sort). They wouldn't be weaned until about 6 weeks. Even if you decide not to totally wean yet, they would love some gruel anyways. Some are just chomping at the bit to have some.

I agree, a longer slower weaning process makes healthier puppies. The mothers antibodies are protecting the puppy until the immune system develops and takes over. A shorter weaning period, coupled with the first DHPP can be a shock for the puppy. I file the razor sharp tips on the puppies nails, so as they nurse they don't scratch moms stomach. If the puppies are really small at four weeks I add a little warm goats milk to the dry ground puppy food.

I used my magic bullet and ground the kibble up and mixed it with goats milk. They loved it! But Baby kept nursing till they were almost 10 weeks old. Let the mom stop on her own, she will tell the pups when enough is enough.
