Question I'm not a breeder, but I hope to be able to breed some day. In the meantime, I am trying to learn all that I can. I have a question, and I apologize if this is a stupid question. I am just trying to learn. I know that some dogs tie more than once during a heat. My question is how do you know how many times is safe to tie? What I mean is, say 2-3 puppies result in the first tie (but, of course, no way to tell), then 2-3 more result in a second tie. How do you keep from the dog having too many puppies for her size? |
You are just suppose to let them tie every other day..during heat..and each time is a chance of pregancy...you know what I am trying to say:D |
most breeders let them tie on the 9th, 11, and 13th day or on the 10, 12th day of the heat. You do not let them go on and on over several days time. You have to have a controlled breeding. |

Oh, I understand that. I didn't mean let them go on and on. Sorry, I probably didn't word my question right. |

It doesn't really matter how many times a dog will tie concerning number of puppies. They can have the same number of puppies from one tie as they can from 3. However it is wise not to let them breed all day every day as the male needs time for his sperm count to come back up. If you breed him everyday his sperm count won't be very good which makes it all pointless. |

Oh, and I would never let them breed all day, every day. |

A female will ovulate all eggs on one day of her heat cycle and all of these eggs will be fertilized within 24 hours of each other. Regardless of how many days you breed, the eggs are usually fertilized at the same time. The reason to breed multiple days is that you don't know exactly which day the female ovulates so breeding multiple days gives you a better chance of breeding near the ovulation date. |

I know, and I really do appreciate it.:) Learning is going to be a very long process for me, as I want to go into it knowing as much as I can. I have started putting a book together just for myself to be able to refer to. There is SO much involved, and I still have tons to learn! But, I'm having fun learning!:) |
