Was Vets comment correct? I took Rose for a checkup the other day. She was 40 days since the first tie. I just wanted to touch base and schedule an xray with the vet. She palpated Rose and said her uterus is definately swollen but couldnt feel any pups to ensure pregnancy. The next thing she stated kinda threw us(husband was there also). "The puppies may be dead, so just keep watching her". wow from what I know you can only palpate at 3-4 weeks. correct? then you do have to wait for xray and movements. Was this a normal response from a dr? |
I am no expert, but I think the vet can do a sonogram to "check for life" very early on in the pregnancy. X Ray is usually a week or so prior to delivery to verify how many puppies, how many breech, and if mom looks like she is going to have any problems. I would call and ask, or seek a second vets if your vet is not equipped with a sono. Not every vet is experienced with yorkies and the small size of the pups. It is not worth chancing the life of your dam or the pups by just waiting... |
litter The comment was stupid to make...is this a breeder friendly vet? |

You should be able to feel pups about 1-2 weeks before she is due, bones start to calcify and then you can feel butts and heads and ribs. I would get another vet if it was me! My vet would never say that unless he thought they actually werre and we had some symptoms to go along with it. |
something wrong with this vet... At best he's a weirdo. Find a new one. |

I really can't believe a vet would say that unless they really suspected dead puppies...which I highly doubt yours are dead. That just wasn't an appropriate comment to make in my opinion |

i agree....he probably does not like breeding..RUN to a new vet...:) |
I just spoke with my vet yesterday. My yorkie is 37 days along today. The vet said that they can do an ultrasound anywhere from 3-4 weeks after the date of the tie. Typically, they will perform an X-ray 50-57 days from the date of the tie. Most breeders have told me that the Xray (which will determine number of puppies, position of puppies, skull size, etc) should be done around day 55 - 57. Hope it helps. Take her to another vet............. |
I take my girls in for an ultrasound at 5 weeks. The fetuses look like dark bubbles because of the fluid around them. |
I do ultrasound at 30-32 days. The main purpose is to confirm pregnancy and to check for heart beats with each puppy. they can tell from the rhythm and speed if the puppy is normal for that age, in distress or not viable (reabsorbed or dead). There is a vet at my vet's office I wouldn't see even for a shot. But I still go there because there are two others who are excellent with this breed. I always specify who I want when I make my appts. |
