Signs before birth?
 
I'm a rookie "Grandma". What signs do I need to look for before my female gives birth. This is her first litter and I'm very anxious. I've heard that she'll stop eating and I know about the temperature thing, but are there other obvious things? Please help.

Yes, there are several signs. Have you done any homework on breeding?

Yes, I try to read everything I get my hands on. I'm probably just over stressing so that I get everything done right. I just don't want to miss something even though I know that every dog is different.

Usually 12 to 24 hours before delivery the mommas temperature will drop to around 98 or 99 degrees but not always. The early signs of labor are digging in bedding, restlessness, not wanting to eat. As the labor progresses the momma will dig more vigorously, she will go potty several times (the puppies moving into the birth canal put pressure on the colon and they have the urge to go more), if you watch the female closely you can see light contractions. When it is really close to delivery the momma will starting panting a lot and she will start having hard contractions and pushing.

Thanks so much. That is pretty much what I've read or been told but I'm getting nervous because she has been doing some of that since yesterday. She's been digging in her been bed and panting a lot. I'm taking her to get groomed this afternoon. I couldn't get her in any sooner. My groomer knows Yorkies well. I'm hoping she can give me some insight too.

How soon is your female due? If she is due anytime then it would not be advisable to take her to be groomed. I would worry that is could cause premature labor and it could stress her out unnecessarily.

She is due this Saturday. I discussed this with my groomer. She is only going to trim around the necessary areas. I brush Lily daily so she's used to being fussed with. I know my groomer won't do anything that would harm her.
