Puppy food while pregnant Hello everyone, I am new to YT. My BellaGina is due to have puppies on May 23rd. I have done my homework prior to breeding her but no matter how good I think I am doing there are so many different opinions. I have been reading over your threads about giving extra calcium during pregnancy. I am a little confused. I have spoken to 2 different breeders in my area and they told me to put my female on puppy food as soon as I breed her. After reading the responses I noted that alot of the breeders on YT say not to give Puppy food until the last week of pregnancy. My yorkie has been on puppy food the whole time. I have noticed that she is putting on the pounds. Should I switch her back gradually to her regular food. She is on day 46. She is a 10lb Yorkie (was) and she was mated with a 4 1/2 pound male. Any advice would be appreciated. |
I never give calcium before one of my girls have puppies . I give puppy food until the puppies are weaned . |

So do you think me giving her puppy food the whole pregnancy can hurt her? |
My vet had me give calcium pills during the pregnancy and while she was nursing and about two weeks before birthing, thru nursing had me give puppy food. |
My dogs, both male and female are on Puppy food all the time because they are breeders and they need that extra nutrition. Once my gal is bred about half way thru the pregnancy, I start giving her wet puppy food an extra time or two a day. NO CALCIUM supplements until after they whelp and at that time, I also increase the feedings of wet. |
Thanks so much for the information. I have to wet her puppy food all the time because she wasn't eating the dry. Even though before she was bred she had no problem with it. Its amazing what hormones will do! I am now feeding her 3 times a day and she seems satified. |
The most common mistake is to overfeed bitches during early pregnancy and underfeed during lactation....For the first 6 weeks of pregnancy we feed the normal amount of normal maintenance diet. The last 3 weeks of pregnancy we gradually increase their food by about 25%...We will sometimes add some quality canned food, or extra protein in the form of eggs, chees, chicken...We never give a calcium supplement before pups are born...We start our moms on Calsorb during whelping until weaning... You do not want mom to get fat...It will make whelping more difficult for her and fat pups are more difficult for mom to deliver... |
