Question about calcium supplementing My Yorkie is due to have babies May 26th. I have read alot about supplementing calcium. The information I have read on the internet says not to give calcium supplements. I asked my vet and he said, do not supplement calcium because it can actually make her not produce enough calcium on her own. Everyything I have read on here says to supplement. I guess I am a little confused. |
I never supplement with calcium until after the pups are born. I feed my females Canidae All Stages Of Life dry dog food mixed with a little dry Chicken Soup Puppy food. |
I don't give an extra calcium supplement as a general rule. However, if I see that she has a belly full of babies, I give a couple Tbs. of fat free cottage cheese the last week of pregnancy in addition to her regular food (Canidae ALS). |
My Vet says not to supplement. I give a little cottage cheese or yogart daily for a week or two before whelping. As soon as pups are born, they get canned topped with cottage cheese, and a 1/3 cup of milk replacement. |
You can feed mom yogurt, ice cream, cal-absorb while she is whelping. No extra calcium until then. |
We do not add any calcium to their diets until whelping or after. |
My vet always has me start a half dose of Pet-Cal (calcium, Vitamin D and phosphorous) for the last month of the pregnancy and increase it to a full dose for nursing until weaned. The trick is to make sure the calcium receptors are full, but not overloaded so that when you stop giving the calcium the mom's body goes back to producing the calcium she needs on its own. I crush the tablet and mix with a tablespoon of cottage cheese or even whelping pudding. Then give her regular food for her meal. The full dose is split in half (morning and night). We've never had a problem with moms or babies. |
My vet also says NO calcium before whelping or you can cause them to have eclampsia by giving it in gestation. We always give calcium pills after whelping 1 pill a day 1/2 in the am 1/2 in the pm. |
Calcium should never be given before whelp. I only supplement with Calcuim if there is a very large litter. I do start feeding Puppy Food to the dam as soon as she whelps. If given before - they can get too fat and make delivery more difficult for them. Best of luck. Charlie:) |
