youngest known age of stud ?? :)just wondering about any experiences of young stud.. what age is the youngest anyone has experienced.. thanks for your input:aimeeyork |
i bred Ceeby the first time at nine and a half months but I have since learned better and did not breed my secondd stud until a year and a half old. |
I have not experienced this myself but I know a breeder that lives near me that bred her male when he was only 7 months. She said it was a complete accident, but it did happen and the dam had puppies. |
I would be careful breeding a stud too young...even if he's fertile the puppies he produces may be bigger or have health problems. I can give you several examples... |
All 3 studs I use are over 2 years old. I have a lil guy Roscoe I cant wait to use. BUT he is too hyper yet at over a year. So waiting for him awhile. Even holding them during the tie I would worry to much about injuries. |
Not only all this but the sperm is very immature at a young age and could cause deformed babies. |

age Ideally, I like between 11 and 13 months for the first time...then skip a month and breed again, skip a month and breed again..that ususally starts them off with no problems..and I use a seasoned bitch to start. |
One thought.. the AKC will not register puppies from a stud younger than 9 months at breeding.. |
stud age No, this is not so...AKC accepts males from 7 months to 12 yrs...over 12 yrs a vet sperm count cert. must accompany papers...females 8 months to 12 yrs... |

AKC will register puppies from males that are at least seven months old. |

Now, my sister-in-law had a 6 month old male poodle that impregnated a female and she had puppies. My SIL was able to prove it and she was able to register the litter. That was many years ago. Once about 5 years ago I used a male that was about 10 months old and he sired a litter with no problem. My recommendation today is to wait until the male is at least a year old or older. Much of the age depends on the male. Some males become sexually mature earlier than others. Sometimes they may be able to tie the female but they might not have active sperm yet. |
