YTCA Breeders
 
I was wondering how reputable are the YTCA breeders? Are the AKC breeders as reputable? I am wondering as I am considering looking for another yorkie in the near future.

YTCA members are AKC breeders (I dont know one that isnt)
FYI the YTCA is a club, the AKC is a registry

Not all yorkie breeders that belong to the AKC belong to the YTCA, but all YTCA members belong to the AKC. The YTCA is the parent club of the AKC and tells the AKC what the standard is. I would want a breeder that belongs to the YTCA, and I believe it would be easier to find an ethical breeder by choosing from their list. They have a code of ethics and conduct as found on this page: Yorkshire Terrier Club of America Code of Ethics

Thank you so much. This is such a help. We got a yorkie last fall and I want to get another one in the near future. Gracie is nowhere near breed standard, so I want to go to a breeder that is striving for breed standards. My daughter and I are eventually wanting to breed so I want to start with breed standards. I cannot complain about Gracie but now that I have an idea (always educating myself) about the standards I want to get a puppy/dog that will meet those.

In that case, I would tell the breeder about my future goals, and perhaps you could find one willing to mentor you.

Hi~

If you are interested in learning more, first hand, about the AKC standard I would recommend attending conformation dog shows. Keep in mind not all the exhibitors you will see at dog shows will be members in the YTCA.

I have personally found conformation dog shows to be very educational. You see the dogs entered, you see who wins and who doesn't and you may even meet a reputable breeder/handler/exhibitor in person willing to answer your questions after the competition. Dog shows are very entertaining and educational...I always have fun when I go!!:D

:thumbup: I personally will only be buying from reputable show breeders from now on, and I really prefer that they be members of the YTCA. Not all show breeders are reputable, and not all YTCA members are ethical, but I believe it is a great starting place...much better luck than going to puppyfind.com or some similar site or opening up the newspaper classifieds to start searching. Always be sure to ask breeders many many questions and expect them to ask you many questions in return. YTCA members show their dogs, and should have excellent examples of the breed. Be sure to question what they do so far as health screening and be sure to get proof of the tests they have done. Just know that most YTCA members breed on a small scale and won't have puppies available often, so you might have to be willing to wait a while for a puppy to become available. It's definitely worth it though to get a well-bred, healthy puppy from an ethical breeder!
