Question for Breeders Quick question...how soon after a pregnant bitch gets milk (that can be expelled from her teats) will she go into labor? I had always thought one thing, but have now been told another. What is your experience? |
I always thought she will give birth within a few days of getting milk. |
On Tiffanies' last litter I think our Vet said a few days after getting milk she would go into labor on us. Hope someone else will post answers too. :) Lee |
I have seen them have milk easily expressed up to a week before puppies arrive. I have also had females that do not have expressable milk until hard labor began. |
Now, accompanied with a belly drop, that means no more than a few days though, correct? |

I've been able to express milk ( and when I say that, it mean squeezing the nipple and a milk drop apprears)on Meiah for about a week now, and no babies yet. No temp drop yet either. |
my experience has been about a week before but most of my bitches don't even have milk until after whelping so i don't pay much attention to that.. |
Mine are usually 3-4 days.In a first timer though not until right before whelping. But this is just my girls. With my singleton litters though it was like a week before whelping My brothers weimer just had pups first time and she had milk 3 days before also, |
My two girls don't have milk till they deliver. |
Nala had full teats for a week before tho I couldnt express any until she had the first puppy. Allie had NO sign of enlarged teats or nothing. But had plenty of milk after whelping I've never seen the "drop" unless you mean when the puppies make the lower vulva area look very "coned" Does that make sense? |
It can be a couple of days to a week. |
It's most definitely not a singleton. And yes, the drop is what you said Debbi. I think Hadley will have them tonight or tomorrow...Wed the latest. The babies have lined up and moved down, when I squeeze her nipples milk flows freely from them. She is having 4-5 puppies. She started losing her mucus plug today. Temp is still normal. I've never had one that had milk before labor...so I was just curious. Thanks guys. :) |
