What wormer do you use?
 
I have always had the vet give me wormer for the puppies. Do any of you get the wormer yourselves? If so, what do you recommend? Thanks!

I have always used nemex2. You can get it almost anywwhere.

I never use a dewormer my pups or dogs don't have worms so I don't give dewormer because it's not necessary. IF they dont have worms why give it?

mine have never had wormss either but I use it as a precaution since my vet recommended it and i've never lost a dog yet from giving worm medicine.. people do things differently. i certainly wasn't saying my dogs have worms.

Yup we all do things differently :) My vet and I do not give our dogs things that aren't necessary but like you said we all do things differently :)
I was just stating why give something that's not necessary? :) Pssst...didn't say anyone'd dogs had worms :) LOL...just giving my opinion ;)

As long as there are no signs of worms, I wouldn't just routinely deworm. When the puppies go for their last vet check before going to their new homes, I'd just have a fecal done at that time to make sure they are free from worms and other parasites. I don't deworm my two dogs or two cats routinely at all anymore...I had fecals done on all four a couple months ago which all came back negative..I just plan to do fecals maybe once a year (or if I suspect worms). I do give the two dogs a heartworm preventative though..heartworms are bad in this area, and heartworms are very dangerous and not worth the risk. That is the only type of worm preventative I feel should be used as a precaution because heartworms can be fatal.

Heartworm meds are MUST in an area where mosquitos are so prevaliant. But other than that I don't deworm unless I suspect worms and have had a fecal exam done and am told they have worms.

I have no idea what would make you suspect your dog had worms...are there pretty obvious symptoms? I am sure Max has not had them, but it would be good info to know I think to keep in mind if something seems "off". I mean, of course, other than obvious squiggling worms in their poop....b/c I know that sometimes they aren't visible to the naked eye.
I was going to give Max a dose of the SafeGuard (once I get Madison checked out and make sure he's either yes or no on them) b/c I bought it actually for Madison the other day and then decided not to give it. SafeGuard supposedly is for most types of worms...like whipworm which some of the other preps don't kill (or protect against).

Would somebody post what are the signs (and I mean, in REAL life...a lot of stuff that you read is so clinical that it might or might not be applicable) that they frequently see if a dog has worms?

Well...I give wormer just as a precaution as well. It's just the way I was taught by my mentor. I've also read and heard from a couple vets that most puppies and kittens are actually born with a roundworm infestation, even if the mother doesn't have them.

The fecal sample is an idea, but I don't usually have them vet checked unless I'm shipping them or suspect a problem...so it's just easier for me to worm. I've never had a problem with it, nor has my mentor. So yep, everybody does things differently!! =)

Anyways, I used Pyrantel and Panacur...and Albon for coccidia...:p

It can vary, but some symptoms are dull coat, weight loss, loss of appetite or ravenous appetite, eating odd things like dirt or garbage, pot-bellied appearance, low energy, diarrhea, vomitting, lethargy, anemic (pale gums), bloody stool, scooting butt, coughing (heartworms), and of course worms in the stool

I routinely worm my personal pets. There is Pyrantel in the heartworm medication I give them every month, and I give them Panacur every 6 months. This is because they are not in the house all the time, and prone to get worms if I don't. I have always been told that all dogs have worms. It's just a question of whether they have enough to show up on fecals or cause symptoms.

Also, just as a side note, I recently read that coccidia can be present (but not show up on fecals) and then become "active" if the pup or dog is under any stress or changes. My vet confirmed this. I was intrigued because this would certainly explain the many cases of coccidia we hear about in dogs that have just gone to their new home. Many people assume that the breeders weren't worming, or paying attention. But it can be that the worms just didn't show until the pup was under a little stress.

We never worm a dog unless it has worms. You are putting poison in their bodies and I don't feel like it is needed. So we just bring in stool samples to the vet and get it checked. Yes, it cost more this way, but we think it's safer.

Ditto that! If we dont have worms no need to put posion in their systems. I've also learned this from my mentor, show/exhibitor/breeder of 20 years and her vet of 15 years ( graduate of Texas A & M ) that I've started using. So, I guess it depends on the vet you have and your mentor. Of course let me again say "it's ONLY my opinion and the way I do things" :)
