Is it necessary to remove dewclaws? Hi I started the thread "To dock or not dock" and got wonderful responses. Now I am wondering about dewclaws. Should they be removed? |
In my opinion it is safer. They tend to get missed when cutting nails, they can get snagged in carpet and rugs... but the removal is usually done when the pup is very, very young. It can be done in older dogs but is a much harder process. |
Zoe still has hers and they drive her nuts..she is always chewing on them and yes they are always missed at the groomers..I say yes dew the dew |
I hsve 2 yorkies 1 with 1 without. Removed is 100% better. |
Remove them. |
I say remove. I have a scar on my arm from a dog that didn't have its dew claw removed. It was an accident but he got me like a fighting rooster!! I got my males removed when they were getting nutered. |
Yes, please do. I have one dog that the breeder didn't remove her dewclaws and they are awful to try to trim. They bother her and tend to curl if not caught fast enough. |
Well I have to say that all my 3 still have theirs. I have never had a problem with them. We dont really remove the dews claws over here. and our groomers here never miss them because I would say that most dogs still have them. |
Necessary? No but IMO, it's better for the dogs. If you choose to keep the claws, you need to pay close attention to their length or they can grow back into the skin. Also, they can get the nail snagged on things and can either tear or rip off. |
