I gotta question
 
A couple we know just had a litter of pups on Sat. and the momma passed away, This may be a stupid question, but can our girl be a surrogate mother? Her last litter was weaned last November. And she doesn't have milk, but I thought maybe if she could that would help out... Please Respond Soon.....:confused::confused:

If your dog still had milk , yes she could.
I've seen shows where a dog nursed baby tigers and..
Kittens....But if she weaned her babies last nov. she has no milk.

i'm not a breeder and i could be totally off here but i think i've heard stories where breeding females who are not pregnant and do not have a litter at the moment can start to produce milk when other females in the house have litters. Its like they are jealous and want to help or something. so you never know. i guess if there maternal instinct is high enough anything is possible.

You are right..I tried to edit and it timed out on me.
Just like humans ... Suckling CAN produce milk...
But it really is a long shot. And you definitely have to bottle or tube feed until then...

How sad! I talked to a lady who had an ad on craigslist. She was looking for a baby for her pomeranian (sp) who had lost her only pup. She now has a kitten and the before and after pictures of this dog is amazing. The owner said she could tell that the dog knew but took to the kitten anyway.

Thanks for the replies, I think I will call the vet and ask what he thinks...I mean if it could work then we should try at least, right?

I have had a bitch produce milk when another litter has been in the house. She nursed right along with the mom of the litter.

it seems like my females all go into heat at the same time. its like their hormones are linked to each other.. i have never heard of this.. that is amazing:):aimeeyork

It would not hurt to try even if she did not get milk but took care of them.They or you could supplement and she could do the rest .Some moms will take right to newborns and some will not so I would be very careful about introducing them to her if that is what you want to do.Even if she takes right to them I would keep a watchful eye on them.She may well start producing milk but not enough to actually take over.
One of my mommas woudl take anything I gave her(kittie baby rabbitts etc) she loves babies any kind and just has that instinct to take care of something,another one of my moms would never think about taking anything but her own.
