Safe Breeding Weights I have a question for U breeders and I'm just wondering here. What would each of U Breeders say is a Safe weight for a Breeding Female (5 lbs. or ??). What about a Breeding Male (5 lbs. or ??) I'm just wondering how small is to small in U're eyes for a breeding a Male and Females' weight. I have: 1 female who is 5 lbs. 6 oz. 1 female who is 6 lbs. 4 oz. 1 female who is 6 lbs. 7 oz. 1 male who is 6 lbs. 4 oz. 1 male who is 6 lbs. 5 oz. :) Thanks Lee |
I won't ever breed a female smaller than 5 pounds, period. That's just my opinion. Their bodies are just too small to handle it and you start having sooooo many more problems with the smaller ones. And of course the male always needs to be smaller than the female, so I say 4 pounds is the smallest male I would breed. Any smaller than that, you are just risking too much with both parents health. |
I say at least 5 lb. I never used one less than 5 1/2 lb and you need to consider the build and not just weight. An overweight dog can easily be 5 1/2 lb and not large enough for breeding |
No matter the weight , there are always risks when breeding . I saw a few 6 - 7 pounds needing a C-Section . |

There is no "safe" weight/size in breeding...but I prefer to breed both males and females that are 5-7 lbs. |
Lexie weighed 6.4 pounds and had to have a C-section. I might get jump on for saying this, but I wouldn't breed under 5lbs, but I think a lot has to do with the female bone structure. I could be wrong on it. :) |

I won't breed anything under 5 lbs. I prefer my females to be close to 7 lbs. |
I just wanted to make sure for my Tiffanie wasn't U're average 5 to 7 lb. Yorkie God love her she was 10 lbs. I just saw where there was Yorkies was 3 to 4.5 lbs and I thought that was to small. Now even one say that is 3 lbs. even if it has a good bone structure wouldn't U think it would still be to small to breed weight wise? I'm just wondering. As far as bone structure is there a way U can judge that in a Yorkie? Thanks for all U're input on this, Lee |
3.6 lbs. female I was very upset to see over on the for sale forum that a fairly new member had pups for sale in which the mom was only 3.6 lbs. and the father was 6 lbs. Someone asked if she made a mistake and meant the mother was 6 lbs. and father 3.6 lbs. and she said no it wasn't a mistake the mom is 3.6 lbs. and I think she said it was her third litter and she was a good mom. 3.6 lbs. I feel so badly for that little one. I have a little girl who is just about the same size and I can't imagine her carrrying babies. Elaine |
