Increasing Lactation My sister does not have a yorkie...she has a bigger dog. Her dog just had a litter of puppies (10!) and is now refusing to eat dog food (hard or soft). She has been advised by her vet to try to feed the dog table food and the dog did eat a burger last night. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations for foods to give her to increase lactation as well as to maintain her general health? Any assistance is appreciated. ~ Kelly |

You really don't want her eating a burger as it isn't healthy for them so try this first. There is also a whelping pudding on here somewhere to give to moms after a birth to keep their appetite up while providing nutrition for them as well. |
How old are her puppies? If the momma dog ate a lot of afterbirths then she might be off her food for a day or so. Often my Yorkies turn their nose up to food the first 24 hours after a delivery and many of them have to be hand fed because they do not want to leave their babies. I always mix some canned pedigree puppy food with the dry puppy food and add a little cottage cheese and offer that to them by hand. Tell your sister that it is very important that she feed the momma dog at least 3 or 4 big meals a day and give her a calcium supplement. Also, make sure she knows to keep taking the mommas temperature the first few day to make sure she is not getting an infection. I hope all goes well for her. |
Thanks for the advice. The pups are about a week old. |
