How many times must they breed? i was just wondering how many times they have to breed to ensure a pregnancy and i read somewhere that the more they breed the more puppies they have... i don't quite think that's the case, but i could be wrong, does anyone know? |
The size of a litter is determined first by the number of eggs that are ovulated. Then secondly, on the number of those eggs that are fertilized, so the max number of puppies possible is determined by the female. The optimum time for breeding is 2 days after ovulation. It only takes once for her to become pregnant, but if you are not doing progestrone testing you will not know exactly when she will ovulate. This is the reason why most will breed once a day or once every other day until she stops standing. We do not breed on certain days of a heat cycle since some females will ovulate on day 8 (or earlier) or day 18 (or later) and any day inbetween. All eggs are believed to be fertilized within a 24 hour time period. |
The female won't have more than her body can handle, so even if you breed say 5 times, her body will just absorb the extra ones. Two or three ties can many times produce more puppies than one tie, but not necessarily. I think most people do two times, but even if they only tie once, that’s still pretty much a guarantee of pregnancy. |
oh right on, so i can allow them to breed once a day or every second day until she stops standing for him? and what are some of the early signs that she's pregnant? i was thinking about getting an ultra sound on day 15 or 20 after she stops standing, is that when you can get an ultra sound done, does anyone know of the average price for ultrasounds? |
i think first before you breed you need to make sure to get both the male and female tested as well as do plenty of research! you can never know enough. Im not sure when you can do ultrasounds... i did an xray instead. i think the prices vary everywhere you go.. so call around your area and figure out what seems to be the fair price. good luck! |
