Update on my little girl Yesterday I posted and asked for suggestions on ways to help my little girl to gain weight. Thank you all. I have used those suggestions. I also decided to take her to the vet for a checkup. My vet told me that when they are this little it usually means that something is wrong with them inside and that the outcome is going to be death. He felt the only reason she is still alive is because of my wanting her to survive and the care I've given her. He wanted me to be prepared emotionally for what is inevitable and not to try extraordinary means to keep her alive. Of course this is very hard to take. Have any of you had such a little one that did well and lived a reasonably long life? Thank You! |

My Peanut was 11 ounces at 11 weeks old... she is now 3 pounds, 4 ounces at just about a year old (she'll be 1 year old on April 30th). I don't think your baby girl is THAT small.... I think the only difference is that all my small ones never had any hypoglycemic issues.... which could be why your vet is probably thinking there may be something wrong with your girl. Some vets have never dealt with the "smaller" yorkies before. Keep her sugar level up and make sure she eats... hopefully she will be fine. Wishing you all the best.... :) |

Has your vet done a blood panel on the puppy? It is possible she has a liver shunt and she might need to be on a special diet. Many puppies that suffer from hypoglycemia also have liver shunts. I know this is hard on you and I pray your baby will be okay. |
I don't know much about it, but I just wanted to say don't give up on the baby (I know you won't:)). I've rescued so many animals before and most people would say to just let them die, but it's amazing what can be done with love and caring and warmth and food and water! little girl She is almost a full pound at 10 weeks..so she may thrive just fine. Of course, she could have a medical problem, but I have had a number of puppies that size and smaller go on to grow and live long, healthy life..best wishes |

Wow I don't understand why the vet would be so negative. Cali was 16 ounces at 10 weeks, had 3 hypoglycemic episodes has very mild MVD and she was sick a lot in the beginning but she is going to be 3 years old in June and now weighs 5 1/2 lbs. So unless the vet found some terminal medical condition, with close monitoring and TLC they do thrive. Good luck |
Thank you all for your encouragement. The vet clinic I go to has a number of vets, so you don't necessarily get the same one each time. The only examine he has ever done has been just to look at her (twice). There have been no tests or anything. For some reason he has it in his head that if they are small and weight gain is minimal there must be something wrong with them (He has told me this twice now). He is a very young vet and the only thing I can figure out is that is what he has learned in vet school. He really doesn't have a lot of experience behind him. When I tell family members my YT ladies recommended this or that, they say "they're not vets. The vet knows what's best." I believe in this case his inexperience is showing and my YT ladies have first hand experience with actually raising these little ones and he does not! Now this doesn't mean I'm never going to take her to the vet again (I've since found out I can ask for the vet I want) It just means I will weigh all options and have an open mind as to what's best for her. I will do everything I can to make sure this little girl does well. Thank You! |
My little chihuahua was only 11 oz at 4 months old!! She looked like a hamster!! She is healthy and weighs 3 lbs now at 4 1/2 years old!! I just had to get up one or two times a night to hand feed her until she was about 7 mos. old. It wasn't enough to leave kibble because she would not get up to eat it. I had to make sure she was eating something every 3 -4 hrs around the clock. She never had a hypoglycemic episode. Good Luck, you can do it! |
