Backyard Breeders Someone sent me this link in a email and after some thought I want to share it with you. I am not trying to start a debate but to just give everyone food for thought. Wow! This is all I have to say: 1. Following his theory, the only dogs that deserve to be born are those that come from homes where trophies and ribbons deck the walls. Your only other choice would be those dogs that are in the local pound. Considering the small size of the litters in Yorkies, how many would that amount to in the general population (after we allow for the loss of some, and that some will be kept by the breeder to show)? We'd be lucky to see one, let alone own one. 2. If he thinks that the people who want to own a little Yorkie, but can't because they aren't available, will then go to the pound and adopt a pit bull mix -- he just doesn't understand dog owners. Sorry, I can't buy into much of anything that he has to say. |
I have to say I agree with a lot of what he says. May I cross post this? I thin it would be an interesting conversation on one of the other boards I belong to as well. "**Anyone who has a litter for fun, profit or by ‘accident’. **Anyone who is so uninformed that they think having AKC papers means that their pet is breeding quality. REDICULOUS!! (sic) **Anyone who advertises their litters in the local paper for sale. (respected breeders only advertise in trade magazines) **Anyone who thinks that by finding their puppies good homes that they somehow don’t have to play by the rules or take responsibility. MANY WILL STILL ULTIMATELY END UP IN THE POUND AFTER YEARS OF ABUSE OR NEGLECT!!!" |

I am thankful to the loving couple who had the litter that brought me my beloved baby who will NEVER end up in a shelter. I could have never been able to buy my precious baby for the prices I have seen here, and I would have never known the joy and love that she has brought to us, |
I find a few good points in this article....and also do not agree with most of the assumptions made. |

I agree with most of it all! But most of you know my beliefs anyway and of course most would figure I'd agree with it LOL... But it does give food for thought and should make some at least stop and think... Some may not agree with most of it but at least it's a good way to start before breeding this wonderful breed! I think that alot of the comments made by him are valid if you are talking about certain breeds of dogs not Yorkies. Pit bull owners are the ones that breed their dogs indiscriminately and that is why at the shelters near me over 60% of the dogs are pits or pit mixes!! I never see any Yorkies at the shelter! Actually, not that many small dogs. It's the large breeds that have like 10 pups a litter, that would take a yorkie 3 or 4 breedings to have 10 pups!! I know it is a slippery slope if you start regulating one particular breed but something needs to be done about the pits!! |
I didn't read the article but did read a few of the posts. My definition (MY DEFINITION) of a byb is a person that breeds a pair or many pairs of breeding dogs with little or no care for the breeding dogs. I put them on the same level as a puppymill. I do not consider a breeder a byb simply because he or she does not breed show dogs. A byb breeder is simply a person who breeds for money and spends little to none on the care or treatment of her breeding dogs. FYI - many byb later go on to become small time or large puppymills. My first Yorkie came from a byb before I knew any better. He stunk for weeks and ten years later this woman is now a small puppymill and 100 times worse then she was 10 years ago. Elaine |

I think what they have to say is great and I have to agree with them, they are very straight forward about it all and I myself am trying to improve my line. I really didn't start out the right and proper way of breeding yorkies but since coming to YT have learned to try to breed for the better of the breed. Now I may of been considered before a BYB by whoever wanted to call me that & that's fine and maybe I was, but I NOW have learned more and will try to produce a better line of Yorkies. I don't show any Yorkies but I do one day through Sage hope to have Show Quality Puppies. Now I have a question here about this and ANYONE feel free to answer this if U can. With that all that was said in that article and this right here said: "Respectable breeders will have walls adorned with trophies and certificates which represent the numerous championships they’ve acquired over the years" I'm taking they are meaning Show and CH puppies/dogs correct me if I'm wrong. What about Respectable Breeders having "Pet Quality" puppies out of CH lines? I mean not all puppies born in CH lines are "Show Quality" puppies are they? Now I just wonder if they be considered BYB by adopting those "Pet Quality" puppies out? (I personally don't think they are BYB) I do think everyone here at YT that is even thinking about breeding Yorkies or any other Breed for that matter should go read this article before U breed. I wish I would of known back then when I 1st started breeding some of what I know now. :) |
I've posted that before and agree 100%. :thumbup: I think the best line in the entire article is this one: "If you breed your pet quality dog, you are a "backyard breeder", whether you breed the dog in your backyard, garage, living room or an expensive hotel room, the term is still backyard breeder." |
