AKC RULE CHANGE ALLOWS OWNERS TO RENAME THEIR DOGS

New York, NY- The American Kennel Club® (AKC) is pleased to announce a registration rule change that now allows owners of AKC registered dogs to change the official name of their pet. Dogs are eligible if they were born in the U.S., have never been bred, or have not won any awards at an AKC event.

"We have a lot of interest from AKC registered dog owners looking to rename their dogs," said David Roberts, AKC's Assistant Vice President of Registration. "In most cases, the dog is a beloved pet and the owner would like to pick a name that has special value to them. The new rule allows owners to change the name when transferring their AKC registered dog, or to request a name change at any time."

Previously, a policy was in place that only allowed the owner to change a dog's name if the dog had been individually registered by its breeder and the request was accompanied by written permission from the breeder. The new regulation reads:

"The name of a dog registered with The American Kennel Club will be allowed to be changed provided the dog was whelped in the United States and in cases where the breeder(s) first individually registered the dog, their written consent would be required. A dog name containing a Registered Kennel Name cannot be changed without the written consent of the owner(s) of that Registered Kennel Name.

However, no change in the name will be recorded by The American Kennel Club after the dog has produced or sired an AKC registered litter or received an award at an AKC licensed or member event.

Any name change must comply with all AKC requirements."

The service fee for a name change is $25. The Dog Name Change Authorization form is located online at http://www.akc.org/pdfs/ADCG01.pdf. The completed form can be faxed to the AKC at: 919-816-4261 or mailed to the address on the application.

Thanks for the information Deana...not sure how I feel about it! I guess it could be a good thing or a bad thing..lol.

I don't see how it would be a problem since it only applies to dogs that have not been bred or shown. It would probably be a huge problem if show/breeding dogs could have their name changed, but I don't see why it would matter if someone changed their pet's name. Personally though I don't really see a point in it...it's just a registered name and why change it once its there? If they wanted to change their pet's call name, nothing was stopping them.

I have had someone remove my kennel name before and name the dog they got from me something else. It is upsetting when you show and someone does things like this to you. Many Kennel names are not registered with AKC.
And it won't just be Pets that will be having names changed, looks like Breeders will now have to register the dogs/or Register the Kennel name.

Do you have that in your contract? To keep your kennel name in her AKC name?

Now, I don't think that is right at all. If a breeder produced the puppy, their kennel name should be at the beginning of the name. I would never take the kennel name off of a dog I buy. But again...it really wouldn't matter if it was just a pet not being shown or bred. And I don't really know why this rule would make any difference with that...I've already heard of breeders whiting out the kennel name of where they bought the dog. And this new rule does apply to show/breeding dogs anyway - just pets.

I dont think I like this at all!!! I can see fraud and hurt feelings going on with this.

I have serious reservations....
 

Firstly, we just experienced a problem trying to back register a female for a young lady.... I gathered all the info she had and because the dog's name had been changed when it was moved to CKC and the breeder kept no records, This girl has a Beautiful CkC only reg. female..... I think this will eventually become a real confusion and add to what is already a mess. Also, I am sure AKC is not offering this service for FREE... Lastly, I register most puppies prior to leaving the kennel to make certain our signature is in the name.... This is a really big deal for us and it bothers me the AKC does not see the value of the breeders who keep them in business.... Thus, this is just another thing I've got to add to an already ridiculously long contract.... BOO!

You got it, its another way to bring in cash flow in my opinion.
Because they could gain the fee we would pay to register before leaving then if a customer wishes to get the breeder to write a letter and the customer pay another $25 on top of that for a name change thats a pretty good price for they will be getting.
Those of you who breed will be the ones who will see this as a not so great idea.
I also agree with you that this is not such a nice thing for them to do to the breeders.
I think it is rather an insult to us.

between the upcharge for length of names and name change this will certainly give AKC a cash infusion. Just another way for the pet owner to spend more money.

It’s way to generate more cash flow.
Alot of people who have AKC dogs who breed and don't show are moving their dogs to different registries.
And it’s hurting AKC.
They are losing money on litter fees and individual registration fees.
I have talk to several breeders and when I ask what registration is on the parents /pups.
They say the parents are AKC but we registered them with , SO AND SO because we are fed up with AKC.
And the main argument is because they are tired of AKC’s nickel and dime tactics .

We show so we will always be with AKC as far as our dogs but when placing pets, we may decide to just not release any papers with our pups if we get any more discouraged with their new ideas and fee's.
We don't have that many so it wouldn't be a big deal for AKC thou :(

YAY!!! I just asked about this TWO weeks ago because I adopted some yorkies here on YT and the dog\'s names are "Joanne\'s Turtle" and "Lee\'s Duckie" and I thought that really sucked that you couldn\'t change the names! This is GREAT news, because now I can rename them to sound like they are MY dogs instead of someone else\'s! :D
