Could she have a cold? Brooke's puppies will be 3 weeks old Sunday, and all have been doing well. They're all nursing fine and gaining weight like they should. The smallest baby (not by much) is a little girl, and I noticed this morning that she sounds a little congested and is blowing bubbles from her nose. Could it be possible that she has a cold? If so, can you use amoxicillin this early? |
Oh that is too bad. We had one like that about a year ago but it was a male and he was 4 weeks.have you listened to her? And she sounds congested? ANd she is acting normal for a newborn? No temp?Has it been a couple of days and she is still like this? Then I would treat her. We did put ours on amoxi the vet gave me a small syringe (it was a syringe for under a pound dosage wise)for they do not need more than a couple of drops 2 times a day. Dose for 2 1/2 pounds is .25 ml so you would have to break that down according to her weight. Sorry I see you said this am I might wait to see how she is this afternoon unless she sounds congested.Dont know what yoru vet is like but I can call mine with symptoms and then treat at home without taking them in? |

Yes, she's completely normal otherwise. She's walking around, nursing well, gaining 2-3 ounces a week (her weight at birth was 4.8 ounces, she is now 10.1 ounces). I have Clavamox and regular Amox (I prefer just the regular to the Clavamox) that I keep on hand here, and I also have a small syringe. Maybe I'll wait to see how things go today, and if there's no improvement by tonight start her on the antibiotics. |
I would start her tonight also if she continues to be this way.If it was someone else I would bring up cold room, drafts etc but I know you cover all those bases. My vet would not say cold he would say respitory-to me same thing. I would prefer the amoxi also for a newborn but maybe the clavamox with an adult depending on the symptoms |

We just had a huge temperature change here and I think that's probably what caused it. She's also walking around more now, so it could be anything. Bless her heart, I feel so bad for her. I gently suctioned the stuff out of her nose, microwaved a towel, wrapped her up, and cuddled her for awhile...just to make sure she was extra warm. When I put her back in with mommy she nursed for awhile, then went to sleep on the snuggle safe disc. She seems to be feeling a little better now, I'm going to watch her today. Thank God she's ok in every other way. She's definitely gaining like she should...they're all little butterballs...;) |
amoxy is safe for young pups, if you have any doubt I would put her on it for 7 days...it will not hurt her. |

about a year ago a bout of "puppy flu" (after many tests the vet couldnt pinpoint it)went thru my 5 week old litter. My vet put them on this right away after one was hospitalized and I lost her. So I know its safe for lil puppies too |
