Looks like it will be May!
 
Well, my little Fancy and Woody have done their deed!!! I am nervous but overly excited!!! They have tied 4 times already!!!! I tell you these little boys are very determined when the female is in standing heat!!!! Should I start feeding her puppy food right away??? What else can I be doing for her right now? I would appreciate any POSITIVE feed back that anyone has to give me!

Yes, you should start feeding her puppy food. Have you ever whelped puppies before? There is much information already posted on the breeders thread. You would be very wise to go back and read some of the posts on whelping puppies and on what supplies you will need on hand. I pray all goes well for you and your babies.

Yes, definitely start her on good quality puppy food. Just be there for her and make sure to give her lots of TLC...she'll need it. :)

And make sure to do as much research as you can about the whelping process...it's not easy, I'll tell you that. Just be prepared for anything...

I am looking at the first week of May...I mean Zoe is looking at the first week of May. I am SUPER Excited! And a bit nervous too.

Please read the book Canine Reproduction and Whelping by Myra Savant Harris. It strongly suggests that you do not put your pregnant bitch on puppy food or any other type of suppliment containing calcium as you will be setting her up for eclampsia. With increasing problems with weak, ineffective contractions making c-sections a necessity and eclampsia being on the rise they are now finding that supplimenting with calcium during pregnancy is causing laziness in the parathyroid which is not drawing the stored calcium from the bones when it is need during labor and lactation. If you are feeding puppy kibble, calcium rich foods such as cheese, or giving suppliments such as pet tabs you are putting your bitch at risk for uterine inertia and eclampsia. Four ties is more than enough to see the job done, there's no need to risk injury by allowing anymore at this point. Congrats on your upcoming ltter, you have alot of studying to do before May.

This is totally news to me. Every vet and knowledgeable breeder I have ever talked to recommends putting the bitches on puppy food but not supplementing with calcium until after the pups are born. I feel that the momma need a quality puppy food for the proper development of the puppies and the development of their bones. I have keep all my dogs on a 'all life stages' food and puppy food for 5 years with no problems. I guess everyone has different opinions on just about everything.

Yes, even expert breeders such as Anne Seranne and Terri Shumsky are now say to not change a bitch in whelps food, not even increasing it until the last 3 weeks. I free feed my 8 so the gals can increase their intake as the need arises and I haven't had any problem with them getting too heavy so far. I think that as the quality of kibble has increased the need to switch to puppy food or to suppliment in other ways has decreased. As long as you are feeding an excellent quality kibble you should be okay. You can get the books I've mentioned on Amazon. Myra also has a book and DVD on acute puppy care that you will find useful.

I havent heard anything about the puppy food issue before now however I was told when I was breeding shelties to give the mommy a ration of liver once a day which would help with the development of puppies and the mother giving her things she would be missing. And as far as after the puppies get here you will be in for some work. Fun work for the most of it like socializing and playtimes and bath times but not so fun work with the rest of it. It is work and is very time consuming however very worth the work put in to the job at hand. Good luck and do your research very important!!! You will need to know what to put into your contracts for puppies, if you offer a puppy pack with your pups you will need to be putting that together, and so on. A lot of work but take it one day at a time and please post pics I love to see pics. :) And Im sure everyone else does also.

I've heard of the liver thing from some old time breeders as well. This would increase protein and iron without messing with calcium levels. My babies only get liver as bait when they are in the ring so I haven't tried it.

I feed Canidae which is a quality 'All Life Stages' dog food and after the pups are born I start adding Chicken Soup Puppy. What food do you have your adults on?

Well Tami I'm so glad I took this year off from Breeding to learn more on it for our Sage & Galahad!! See I put Tiffanie on the puppy food and tums!!!! Now I know not to with Sage!!! See U do learn something new every day even with Yorkies....Thanks for the advice!!!!
