Is LS more common in smaller yorkies? I was wondering is LS more common in smaller yorkies than the bigger ones? |
LS is common in yorkies all around |
low growth weight is an effect (or symptom) of livershunt. |
I would tend to say yes. It seems like most all the Yorkies I have read about that are under one year old and are diagnosed with liver shunts are under 5 lbs. Part of that is because dogs born with liver shunts are usually stunted and just do not grow like they should. |

hmmmm i dont know but i do know before lacey was diagnosed with mvd at 9 months she was 4lbs 11ozs. i think she was growing perfectly before she became ill. now she is only 3 lbs 2 ozs, i know it can be a sign of problems if they are small but they can also be growing normally and have it./ |
LS can affect any yorkie, regardless of size. It's always important to know if there is a history of LS in your dogs' pedigrees and to health screen. |
There are Yorkies who weigh in the teens who have liver problems. Stunted growth is a symptoms but not just small Yorkies are affected. |
The question is are they more common in small Yorkies. The majority of Yorkies that I have heard of that have portosystemic shunts are usually small (under 5 lbs.) I know there are some bigger ones out there with portosystemic shunts but I just have not heard of that many of them. Anytime I hear of a Yorkie puppy having hypoglycemia I get concerned because sometimes that is one of the first indications that shows up in a liver shunt puppy. If I had a hypoglycemic puppy I would definitely recommend running a blood panel on that puppy just to be safe. In a perfect world people would be getting blood panels on all newly acquired puppies, whether you are a breeder or a owner but unfortunately we do not live in a perfect world. |
