Record Keeping I would like to know what type of papers/records that people file away. I know you will need to have the buyers information, testing results/info, and the contracts information, but can some one tell me what else and how you would file them? Would you just put them in a cabinet in their own little section (i.e.. a contract section, a section for the litters from this dam/sire, a testing section, ...)? Thanks |
Are you asking about what AKC wants or all records in general? AKC requires you to keep records on from where and whom you got your dog and on what date. They require you to keep records of what date you bred your dog and to what bitch, what date they were whelped and to whom(address, name) and what date to pup was sold and if it was on full or limited registration. And if you kept the dog also. Also, each dog must have a "kennel" number. You must have the dog marked in such a way that if an inspector comes to check your dogs, they can tell which dog goes with which AKC paper and records. This is done by micro chipping, tattooing or collars with the number of the dog written on it. I keep all these records plus puppy contracts, show records and medical records on each dog. I also keep an inquiry list also. I keep records on each puppy as they grow too.(growth rate, etc) I keep all vet, food, travel, etc receipts also. |
Does'nt AKC have a records management section that helps you keep track of the records and what to keep. I am fairly new at this I just had my puppies about 1-2 months |
Yes, they have all the down-loadable forms you need for record keeping. |

For AKC inspections you have to have the records to be available for physical inspection. I have all of mine in a file so I can just hand them over if the inspector comes. |
Thanks, again... Someone came to me where I work saying she was breeding her chihuahuas and I ask about her 'breeding program' and she told me she has all the info on the computer. Then I read the thread about someone getting an inspection and having the records handy. The person seemed nice and friendly, but ignorant in some areas in breeding. I know I can't talk her out of it but at least I can help her along and sort of guide her in what to do with her records and what to record/save and help her do things the right way (even though I'm still learning myself)... |
Your welcome!! I am going to try to put all of my info on the computer also(just for me). My first inspection was NOT great and the inspector was SUCH a JERK!!!! This person just threw all of my records on the floor and just was unpleasant. But the last 2 times, this person was perfectly nice. :) good luck!!!!!!!!! |

And the women I was speaking to said something about losing a lot of her info in a move so she only had her back up papers from her scanning. She says she now just scan the information and save the originals but they end up being lost and just don't worry about them. She puts her information in emails to herself and an online storage system, I believe (I have to ask her again)..... I'm so glad your own this late! (I'm a little bored. LOL) |
