won't breed I have a little 2 yr old, un-neutered male. He has already had a successful mate and I am now attempting to breed him again with a new female. He is so not interested. Female is 6 yrs old, definitely in heat but he doesn't know her. He has spent the past day and a half with her and.....nothing. Does he need more time? I just assumed hormones would take over and boom. HELP |
Apparently he doesn't think it's time. His nose knows when she ovulates and it knows when the eggs are mature and ready to be fertilized. My boy has never let me down, I trust his nose. You either missed ovulation or it needs more time. His nose will tell him when. |
is she in standing heat? how many litters has she have? 6yrs old is a bit old in my opinion |
Is the female at your home with the male? Are you keeping them separated except when you attempt to breed them? How long has the female been in heat? |
I have been taking the male to the females home. I have 4 yorkies here and I figure too much excitement for anything to happen. First time female has ever been bred. She has been in heat for about 5 days |

I don't understand. Do you think she is too old or the timing is wrong |

I can't believe the owner of the female would do this to her gal. This would be like trying to have your first child at 50 years old, quite a difficult undertaking that would take alot of special care. This poor bitch is too old and the breeder far too inexperienced if she is trying to breed her on day 5. Your male knows better, he knows that it isn't time yet. Sounds to me like some more education and a younger bitch is needed. |

Honestly, these are things the girl's owner should be WELL aware of if she is breeding her. These are basic principals of breeding that breeders need to have studied and gained knowledge of BEFORE breeding. I would suggest that if your guy is stud material, you take him and seek him out a younger, more age appropriate lady.:p |
My assumption would be that she just isn't quite ready. Most experienced males know when the right time is. Good luck! Quote:

wow, 6 years old? Most reputable breeders retire them around that age... |
Thanks so much for the info. I am sure the owner of the female has no idea she is too old. I am definitely going to tell her what I have learned here. She loves her baby and would never knowingly harm her. Thank you for averting a potential tragedy. |
