Tail docking This may sound like a silly question. My little girl, Fancy, just had her first baby. Very nice, healthy, strong little boy. I'm a tad bit excited. My question is: Help, At what age you most of you dock the tail? Someone told me when they get their first shots, and that just seems too old to me. Thanks, Jeanie |
Puppies usually have the tails and dew claws done between 3 and 5 days old. |
that is too old, at about 3 days if they are strong By the way congratulations!! |
Tail docking Reply to Thread Thank you so much. I called the vet, and she has me scheduled. Jeanie |
Just want to say Welcome :) |
Usually around the 6th day, especially if they are small. Best not to do if too young since the blood (I heard) does not clot until the 2nd day they are born. I just had my puppies done and they were 5 days old. My vet first scheduled their docking to be done on the 3rd day and I rescheduled since they are small. One was only 3.5 oz. at birth. T. |
i usually do it from 4-5 days. no later than 6 days |
Ann Seranne (Mayfair Yorkies) suggest 6 days for tail docking pg. 209 of her book, "The Joy of Breeing Your Own Show Dog." She says "they suffer less discomfort when the operation is performed at six days, When their grip of life is stronger, than four." T. |
I dock mine at 4 to 5 days old. I was told by my mentor that if you dock before 3 days old they have no clotting factor in their blood and can bleed to death. |
Tail docking Thank you everyone. He's all taken care of now and doing wonderful. Since there's only one puppy, he's a very big strong (LITTLE) puppy. hehe. I'm just worried now that I'm not cut out to breed puppies. He's only 3 days old, and I can't imagine me selling him. I might just have to keep him. I'm already head over heals in love. How do you do it? Does it get easier? Jeanie |
Congrats on your healthy baby boy! I too am wondering if I am going to be able to part with Zoe's babies when the time comes..lord tell me there is a way or my hubby is going to flip...:p |
:wavey: Hi, welcome to YT!! Congrats on the new baby!!! & I'd probably want to keep him too! LOL,, |
Tail docking Not sure how I posted my reply above the comments:) Still learning how to use the board. Hope to be around for a while. Hugs, Jeanie |
You know, I've docked a lot of tails now...and I've NEVER had one to bleed at all. The dew claws do a little, but I use the quik stop gel and it stops immediately. I did Brooke's when they were 2 days old, and my mentor does them at 1 or 2 days. |
