I just can't feel them!! Everyone else seems to be able to feel the "golf balls" in the belly between 25-35 days PG, I have NEVER been able to do it. Am I doing something wrong?? |
Be very careful, improper palpitation can cause damage to the fetuses. Better to let the vet do it if you must know or just wait a bit and you'll feel the little boogers kicking! |

My vet always smiles and tells me I have a "gift". As I can usually tell if a bitch is pregnant by 21 days after the 1st tie. The embryo's are usually pea sized at this time as they have only been in the uterus for a few days. By 28 days...I can usually tell how many pups are in the litter. Now...this is only with small dogs, as I never owned or bred larger dogs. If I cannot palp the pups by 25 days...I am 100 % certain the bitch did not "take". I haven't been wrong yet, LOL The earliest I have palp'd and confirmed a pregnacy was 18 days. And yes I agree...inexperienced hands will not know what to feel for, and could possibly do damage. I had a wonderful mentor who took her time with me and shared her "gift". : ) |
I have to say my vet says I am very good also,the earliest would be 26 days for me,by 34 days the usterus is filling with fluid and is hard to feel them unless you have a singleton.Some bitches carry them high up to the backbone almost and some way down low in the abdomen,some are way back back by their butts and some are way up in the ribs. Hard to find them sometimes and again it depends on where they are implanted and where your bitch carries her pups.By 26 days they are marble size maybe a tinch smaller but by 30-32 days they are grape size like Pat said.(unless you have a singleton and then they are about quarter size by 30-32 days.) It is easier for me if they are standing and she has to be relaxed. The fatter the bitch the harder to palpate the skinner the bitch easier it is and a empty stomach. My vet showed me how to do it about 20 years ago.Can always ask your vet to show you how. |
I can never tell either when they are golfball sized, but once they are moving round and a little bigger, I can always feel exacly how many are in there. A vet once told me you can't tell by feeling once they get bigger, but for me its so much easier for some reason. |
i never try to feel them due to possible injury to the puppies. |

It is easier for me if they stand. When you get good at it you can count them and know how many there are. |
