Having dog as a stud I have a 5 month old yorkie boy and am interested in breeding him. i think he would help make GREAT puppies. (sorry havn't posted a picture yet) I have been researching for awhile and it seems like an interesting endevor. I understand that they require some testing before hand, on average, how much does this cost? I also found it hard to find the exact age when they are mature and ready to breed. What age do you find that is? And how much would you charge as a stud fee? Thanks in advance for your help! This is so exciting! |
Well, first off... Welcome to YT. As for a stud dog.... I would think carefully about that and do a lot of research. If you do a search on here you will find a lot of valuable info. You first need to make sure your male is a good representation of the yorkie breed. You can go to shows, look at photos and I would also suggest going to the YTCA.org website as it has a lot of good info as well. It takes a lot more than just throwing a couple of dogs together. You have to be knowledgeable about your lines as well as educating yourself about breeding in general. Also, stud dogs tend to mark a lot and that can be a difficult thing to deal with so there are a lot of negatives you will have to consider as well. As for testing, yes, again if you do a search, you will find some good threads on here that will give you some ideas about what to expect although costs really range a lot depending on where you live. I'd say at about a year they are ready to breed but some people may say a little later. You'll want to make sure you have a good example of the breed in looks, personality and health. Also know about parents and grandparents. A lot of people think studding out their male is easier than it actually is. You need to know how to assist in the breeding and it helps to understand the female heat cycle even though it is the female's owner's responsibility to bring them over when she is ready. Stud fees can vary quite a bit by location, quality of dog, pedigree, championships, etc. |
If you believe that he's a good candidate for breeding put him in the ring in a month and see what the experts have to say. Shows are for judging breeding stock and you will find the education as well as the knowledgable opinions there invaluable. We want yorkies to continue to be the incredible breed that they are so let's endeavor to only breed the best. |

In the US we have infodog but I'm not sure where you get info for Canadian shows. We have several canadian members so I'm sure someone will know. I do know that you can show them starting at 6 months old so they don't have to be in full coat and it's so much fun to show a puppy. They have puppy matches for pups between 3 and 6 months of age occasionally as well. I've been showing my 4 month old at them and we are having a ball! Go check them out, it's so much fun to show your baby off! |
Go to Canuck Dogs (google it) it has all the CKC show information, handling classes etc for all over Canada. |
Before breeding him , you'll have to learn more than the age and how much you'll charge for stud fee . |
