Breeders who have a lot of different breeds. A lot of times when some people ask advice on wither to purchase from a certain breeder, and these breeders breed multiple breeds, they dont get a very good feedback. Am just wondering if anyone thinks that some of these breeders can be indeed reputable breeders. It seems to me that if anyone breeds more than 1 breed, then they are considered nothing more than BYBs. Am just wondering what your thoughts are on this. I mean some people may have a lot of Yorkies they are breeding, while other people can have the same amount of dogs, but they just happen to be different breeds in the same home, and they arnt considered reputable. |
It's a huge red flag as it is something commonly associated w/ puppy millers. How many other breeds is also a question. There is a big difference between 2 different breeds and 5 w/ every possible combo of cross breeding in between. Also, if there are multiple breeds IN ADDITION to other warnings that the breeder may not be reputble... If it's a breeder w/ 2 breeds, but with no other areas of concern, I wouldn't automaticallly suspect them of being unethical. |
I know quite a few breeder/exhibitors that have 2 or three breeds and are very reputable! I am not talking about them having 100s of dogs, but do very well with a few of each breed. some of them are going for their judging licenses and others are just "in it" for the love of the breed. But then there are the multiple breed owners that are just byb'ers and mills. They do nothing but crank out puppies and can pull from a larger market by having more different kinds to sell. they are just "in it " for the $$$$. Again, the buyer needs to do the research on the breeder before making a purchase. |

I agree...It depends on how many breeds the person is breeding, if they're mixing, etc. I think that if a breeder has only 2 breeds and seems all around good besides that, I would not call them unethical, but more than that would be cause for concern, IMHO. There are a couple of show breeders who show and breed both yorkies and maltese. But more than one breed does raise a red flag initially. |
breeds I do not think having more then one breed raises a reg flag. It is not uncommon for extremely reputable breeders to have 2, even 3...but IMO you have to look at all the others factors. I had Doxies and Yorkies at one time...I concentrated on the Yorkies and used a mentor for the Doxies...bought stud service, had her evaluate, took short cuts by askng her first without reading or going to a shows and speaking to other Doxie breeders, although I did show them a bit...and I had just as nice pups as my mentor, because I bought her bitches and used her studs, basically did as I was told so I would not screw up the breed... All my time was consumed with the breed of Yorkies and found it so hard to learn all the kennel names, pedigrees of both breeds, history, health issues, on and on..it never ended. I am trying to learn about the Biewers and it is harder for me...I find myself taking short cuts, as with the Doxies, but I have a few mentors and do not plan on breeding, so I feel I can't hurt the breed... |
I wish knew how to quote multiple threads. EERRHH. But so far I agree with all the replys. I beleive that some people who breed different types of dogs, can in fact make great breeders. As some of you said, you gotta look out for the 1s that are not so great. |
I don't think it makes someone automatically unreputable. I know someone with 5 breeds who's a wonderful breeder. She doesn't have A LOT of any of the breeds. However, I don't think I could breed more than 2 or 3 breeds...the work involved in keeping all the males/females separate for someone who keeps them all in my home would be incredible. I know that in the near future I want to add Biewers, but they're still very similar to Yorkies...and I may eventually do either Chis or Maltese, but ONLY one or the other...probably chis. |
wellllllllll i think one breed is good enough for me i could not imagine taking care of another breed not when i keep all mine in full coat i would just have to make short cut's which i am not willing to do i know a few who have a few different breed's i just have problem's with the oop's that happen!:D |
It takes a lot of knowledge, studying, and experience to know ONE breed well enough to breed well...let alone three or four. |
Yes I would have to say I have also always had yorkies or another breed,but never 3 or more different breeds.So it really depends on how clean and how their place looks and how the pets look.that's my opinion of course!:) |
Also in my county you are only allowed six dogs total. |
