OFA Luxating Patella Hi: I'm new here. Just delighted to find this group. This is a question/survey for all breeders. Do you have your breeding stock evaluated for LP? I was just made aware that OFA has a data base and issues certificates for this. My vet doesn't feel comfortable grading very young puppies and kind of hemmed and hawed about what age he WOULD feel comfortable. We purchased our brood bitch as a show prospect and her stifles had been x-rayed and graded clear. The breeder has been working with her vet and doing this for a long time. She only breeds individuals with excellent stifles. I am very interested in producing Yorkies that can live out their lives as housepets, show dogs or performance dogs and good stifles are needed for all. My other request is for information about vets in the Portland, Oregon area who are competent doing this exam, particularly if they will grade young puppies. Thanks, guys, CJ |
what area in Portland are you?? Dr. Kulkins 503-682-3737 you can test all you want but will not get a OFA grade number under 12 months. Hope this helps |
My friend is a breeder of German Shepherd Dog and he told me that the test have to be done at 2 years old to real sure . |
Hi, Kimberly: Thanks for your reply. I know I have heard this vet's name mentioned before. I went to the OFA website last night and read that no certs are issued prior to 12 months of age. I guess that's one of the things I've been trying to find out is how to determine as young as possible the condition of the stifles. We are determined to breed Yorkies with better stifles and better teeth. It looks like you do a good amount of breeding. Do you show your dogs? Do you guarantee stifles on the puppies you sell? Although we have been hobby breeders and have bred and shown dogs for over 30 years, we are fairly new to Yorkies and I appreciate your good information. Thanks, CJ |
CJ what dogs did you show prior and how long have you been breeding Yorkies? Dr Kulkins is one of the best toy breed doctors (yorkie specialist) around, since he's about an hour away from me I've only used him once. Jan Angle, Mansmor Kennel/show person who lives near you highly recommends him. Iam in Eastmoreland (reed college area) I currently use Southgate Animal clinic "Dr. Powell" I have yet to show but have been encouraged to show "Mercedes" she is 7 months. As I have said here before I dont know if I 'm cut out for the ring, the politics or the idea of enhancing the dog to win, it just doesnt make my toes tingle with excitement!:)! |

There's nothing more fun than showing a puppy. I would highly encourage you to get your feet wet and take Mercedes in the ring. Years ago we showed Dobermans and then Rotts. We competed in the obedience ring as well as the conformation ring. I was waiting my turn to go into the obedience ring when I fell in love with the little Yorkie working his heart out in the ring. He was SO cute and when they were done, his handler picked him up outside of the ring and off they went. That's when the seed was planted. My first Yorkie I bought strictly as a pet and for obedience work. She's now 15. CJ |
I would also be concerned with Livershunt in yorkies, sound stifels are important, especially if you plan to show, but Livershunt also is important, it can be a killer. There is also surgery for it, but it is very expensive, and a lot of people can't afford it and it is genetic. |
