She hates her whelping box... I got Brooke's whelping area all set up today in her special playpen, but she hates it. I wanted her to get comfortable with it before she actually started having babies, so I introduced it to her today...but as soon as I put her in it she starts freaking out. Should I change it? Move it? Just try to put her in it when she actually goes into labor? I'm not sure if it has to do with being with me, or just that she hates the pen in general, but her favorite place to hide is under my bed and I just can't let her roam. I'm too afraid she'll go to hide under there and the next thing I know she'll be having them somewhere I can't reach! |
box Some ignore our efforts to make them a nice whelping box until the actual time of labor and pushing out a puppy, then they are happy to stay in it. |
Yep - they really will not care about it till after the pups come and they are in it! I had a real fancy one - one time - when I first started back -it had a french white netting and bows and everything - she could have cared less. Now I just know - it is just for comfort, warmth, and to help keep the pups in. Best of luck! T. |
I have never had one go willing into their whelping box before they have the puppies. I try not to stress the momma out any more than I have to, so I just monitor their temperature and watch them like a hawk. Once they start into labor we retire to our bedroom and we whelp puppies in a big wicker dog basket on our bed. After the pups are all born then I put the momma and her puppies in the whelping box which is in a exercise pen in the spare bedroom. I also hang sheets on the sides of the x-pen to give the momma a little more privacy. If she is used to being in the same room with you, as most of mine are, then it would be very stressful to her now to confine her. How soon is she due? It is frustrating when you are on puppy watch because it is so hard to get anything else done. I wish you luck. |
When my shih tzu had puppies 16 years ago( I had never bred before), I bought a book on shih tzu's and it even showed how to make a whelping box..my hubby, being as handy as he is, built one like it showed, and she was the same way when we tried putting her in it, but, when it was time to have her babies, she went to the box...we had it set up in the kitchen for her |

Today is her 57th day, but she is HUGE and her belly has already dropped...so it could be within the next couple days. Her xrays showed 5-7 pups, so this one isn't leaving my side this week! |

Last litter mama would not have them in her box,,she decided it was Roscoes brand new chenille puppy bed or nothing...after a few pups we moved to whelping box and she stayed. I loved the idea of sheets...hehe..but I bet that would be great if you would have drafts. I always use heating pads. But still worry about drafts.I live in a older ranch farmhouse. Thanks for the idea! |

Do U have a extra bedroom for her to whelp in? We had a spare bedroom without beds in it (It had my crafts items, tables & computer in it), Tiffanie wouldn't go into her whelping box either until the night/morning of her whelping, then she went in & out tons of times, nesting and I slept on the floor with her and she woke me up every single time she got up I was grabbing the flash light to see if a baby was on it's way! LOL! I had her a puppy pad in our room so she wouldn't have to go outside any. She even had her regular bed in our extra bedroom and she did go into her whelpin' box for the actual whelping! So I'd say if U have a room to spare give it to U both ALONE and U both sleep in it with her. I was in on the floor sleeping for 2 weeks with her due to her being so big with her last litter, she whelped 6 beautiful babies for us not a trouble one and everyone so healthy and perfect!! I feel they need to be with U her breeder alone when Whelping, they feel safe with U and no other activity going on...My girls was out of school when she whelped and they was so excited and would bet as when was whelping them boy or girl lol...They sit in our hall by the living room quiet as a mouse and I'd say here comes one girls, boy, girl I'd hear. I had a moses basket from the birth of our last daughter (Now 9) and for some reason I just couldn't part with it, now I know why!! With our last litter I allowed Tiffanie to sleep in it so it would have her scent in it and then I used it when she was whelpin' a puppy, I'd see her straining for the baby to come out and I already had it warmed up with the heating pad under the mattress and I'd put the puppy already whelped inside under the blankies and they lay there until she was done whelping that baby and then I'd put them back in her whelpin' box with her, it was perfect for her and those dolls so now I keep it and I'm gonna do the same thing with Sages baby dolls! LOL! Our Yorkie Mothers' do give us precious memories with whelping and raising our babies! God love them! I miss the newborns already! That's why I come here to see all the babies! Hope this may help U some. |
