Feeding a lactating yorkie! Help! Well our little girl gave us 5 yorkie puppies! it was her first litter too! we are utterly amazed. However we are worried we are not feeding her enough, we are wondering how much food should we be giving our girl, and what kind would you recomend. At the moment we have been giving her wet puppy food, as well as calcium supliments. She just seems to be withering away to nothing, please help! She was 7 lbs prior to pregnancy if thats any indication. |
First off, she needs food available to her at all times. Everyone varies on which brand and exactly what they feed. Right now I'm feeding Royal Canin but I'm switching to Canidae ALS here within the next month. For dry food, she gets puppy food. 1/3 of a can of wet puppy food twice a day for the first week if she doesn't seem to be "bouncing back". She also gets cottage cheese, probably a 1/3 of a cup twice a day. |
When my Gellica was pregnant and nursing, she ate about 3x her normal amount of food. We also gave her scrambled eggs and cottage cheese along with the puppy food. Congratulations on your litter! |
Since it is such a large litter it wouldn't hurt to give her 1 tums a day as a suppliment. Keep an eye out for symptoms of eclampsia. |
My vet just gave me some nutri cal for my yorkie mom.she wasa not eating and now eating like crazy. |
oh,iams small breed is great. |
How old are the puppies? It is essential that mom eats at least 3 or 4 good meals a day. I feed mine around at 7 am, 5 pm, and 10 pm. She should always have dry food available. I feed my mommas a mixture of Chicken Soup and Canidae dry and I add some canned Pedigree Lamb and Rice puppy food. You can also add a little cottage cheese or a hard boiled egg yolk. Make sure you give her 1/2 calcium pill in the morning and 1/2 before bedtime. I would recommend that you order, if you have not already, a product called Cal-Sorb from Revival Animal Health. It could save your bitches life if she get eclampsia. A YT member just lost her bitch a couple of days ago to eclampsia and her bitch was nursing four puppies that were 3 weeks old. She was also giving calcium supplement. Please keep us posted on how she is doing. |
Thanks for all the info, you guys are great. She does have dry food availible at all times, its currently solid gold puppy, weve also been feeding her 1/2 can of royal canin puppy 3 times a day and one feeding of cottage cheese. she does get a half a calcium pill in the morning and the eveing as well. however we will be changing it up a lil i think :) shes all skin and bones is whats worrying us, so i think were gunna add another wet feed. she seriously destroys a can of wet food in like 30 seconds. any more tips you guys have would be great. Thanks again. puppies are 2 weeks old yesterday btw. they are doing fantastic! |
also should we give her cal sorb now or just if she has a problem? and how much should be in each wet feed is half a can too much? |

I would concentrate on getting her to eat more of the Solid Gold. Canned food is mostly water. For each feeding I would say 1/3 of a can would be plenty mixed in with the Solid Gold. Another food I like that would really add some weight to her is the Natural Balance Dog Food Rolls sold at Pet-co. I would recommend the Lamb because it is easier to digest. You could grate a little into her food and cut some up for treats. Just be sure to refrigerate it after you open it. |
