Should We do anything extra? 1 Attachment(s) We got a new litter today. This is Sadies 2nd litter.. her 1st was just 2. This litter she had 7 this time! They are all around 4oz. Mama was 8 pounds before birth. She had 5 boys and 2 girls. They are all eating and mama seems to be doing very good. Should we feed her something extra? We give her a vit. everyday. I was just shocked at the number! |

Congratulations on the "Pile Of Pups". ;) |
wow congrats & WTG Sadie:) |
My yorkie came from a litter of 8 and had to be hand fed after a week because their mama developed eclampsia and almost died, which is basically too low of calcium levels. Good luck with that large of a litter Here are the signs of Eclampsia: Eclampsia is a very serious disorder but fortunately the signs are fairly easy to recognize, especially when coupled with the period of lactation. Initially, the affected animal will be restless and nervous. Within a short time, she will walk with a stiff gait and may even wobble or appear disoriented. Eventually the animal may be unable to walk and exhibit extreme leg rigidity. Body temperature may increase to over 105° F and respiration rates will increase. At this point death can occur if no treatment is given. |
WOW! That's A LOT of babies! Good momma and grandma! I boiled a chicken for mine. When I would serve it to her, I put in some rice and let the rice soak up the juice. She loved it and the babies got FAT! :p Don't forget to give her calcium pills while she is nursing. Don't want her to get eclampsia. |
Wow, congrats on your new babies!! I'm not a breeder but I know just from reading things on YT that you really need to take great care of the little mama. I don't want to scare you but you should read the following threads. I just did a search on eclampsia. There were other threads as well. Large litters are a very big deal with Yorkies. Just watch her and see that she's getting the extra nutrition she needs. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...ight=eclampsia http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...ight=eclampsia http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...ight=eclampsia Give mom and pups a kiss from Bo and I. Keep us posted on their progress. Thanks for sharing the pic. |
