do you breed consecutive heat cycles? Just wondering how many breeders here breed their females on consecutive heat cycles or if that is a big no no. does it depend on the female? Do you always skip a heat? (once a year breeding?) I'm not a breeder nor looking to be, just trying to find out if this is common procedure, and the reason why not to. |
Tricky question as not all females go into heat exactly every 6 months. I wouldn't breed every heat if they came that frequently...personal choice. Even if the girl didn't need the time to recoup, I would!:p |

Hey Misty, What determines if they need the time to recouperate? If a female right now has 3 week puppies and a 7 month old puppy, that would mean she bred two cylcles in a row, yes? (My math faded with my memory, LOL) Approx 6 months, I think. |
I've heard a lot of people lately who breed 2 in a row and then skip one. I like to do every other heat personally. |

I know there are lots of great breeders out there that breed 2 cycles, then skip one. I just choose not to. I like to give the female time to get back to a healthy weight--I know my girl always has some "extra baggage" afterwards. Also, I think it's beneficial to get a good idea of how the previous litter turns out. I just can't imagine restarting the whole process so soon after the previous litter left. But again, that's just me...it may not be what is best for others in other situations. |
