Xrays on a pregnant Yorkie So, I always get Xrays for my puppies. Most importantly making sure they will pass when she delivers and 2nd to get a 'head count' so I know roughly how many to expect. So, I was talking to my stud owner sending her pix of the expectant mom and updates. Then she told me I should NOT get xrays, that its terrible and puts them at risk for being blind. Now, what do you guys think? Ever heard of that? Any pups go blind? |
taking an x-ray of the mother will not make her blind. if this was the case i'd be in some serious trouble seeing that i have to sometimes take 20 x-rays of our patients a day. an x-ray is perfectly safe. |

Well, I've never heard that. But my vet won't do them anyway because he says it does put stress on mama. My girls will not lie down for anything. When they have their ultrasound the tech has to hold them on one end and me on the other.:) |
Thanks for you guys' imput, I never had a problem, with getting them. But she really was adamant on me not getting her xray'd. Anyways I just wanted to hear what you guys thought. :) |
Personally, I have been breeding for ten years and have never x-rayed and have only had one c-section (one big puppies). I never knew so many people x-rayed until I came here on YT. I find it curious because everyone one here advises that even if the vet thinks the mom might have problems passing the pups, to let the bitch go into labor anyway. Also, as far as knowing how many puppies she will have, I know that is not accurate with bigger litters. I had a friend that had two x-ray on two different bitches and the vet was wrong on both of them, one had one more and one had one less than the vet said. I really don't think it would hurt the mom but the best thing to do would be to ask you vet if he has any knowledge of any adverse effects of x-raying. |
I also want to add that I sold a pup to a vet tech once that nearly died because the vet's x-ray machine became defective and unknown to her it was leaking radiation. She started becoming very very ill and after about a week they found out she had radiation poisoning. She lived but the damage that was done was irreversible. Dee...our vet does all her ultrasounds with them standing up...very easy and our girls just stand there like they are getting their tummy rubbed. We also have x-rays done, without any problems. We usually have them done on day 59-60 to see size, make sure all are alive and well at this point (there will be gas around the baby and possibly collapsed bones if one has died), and also gives our girls one last check up with the doctor before delivering. |
This is my first breed. How long does it take for her stomach to really take form? |
