Arizona Mandatory Spay/neuter Bill!! Lets not let this pass here in Arizona!!!!!!!! I, personally, dont want to give the government any more $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ than I already do!!!!! It is Az Bill 2516. Lets all get together and vote it down!!!!!! Please contact all of your friends and breedes of other breeds too!! |
I'm all for mandatory spay/neuter laws. Reputable breeders should have no problem getting a breeding license. Something must be done to stop irresponsible owners from breeding their dogs |
I have not read this bill yet, but usually they hurt your reputable small time show breeders who are beyond dedicated to the breed....while they allow puppy mills to persist for a small fee. I do not believe that mandatory spaying and neutering of all animals is the answer, I think if they really want to get to the source of the overpopulation problem then how about a bill that puts these mass puppy producers on such a short leash and under so many laws and huge fines that it becomes unprofitable for them and they stop! Ohio has legislation that is pending, it is actually pretty good legislation, my only critique is that the fees for breeding licenses stops at a certain # of dogs and does not continue to climb with the number of dogs owned...this will only hurt the pocket book of small breeders, drive up the prices of good puppies and therefore increase the number of dogs that are bought from pet stores who cut corners and mass produce to keep prices lower than most responsible breeders. Just my 2 cents! |
Yes, it will definately hurt the reputable breeders who only have a few litters per year. the ones that it wont hurt are the pet stores and the mills they buy from. It probabley wont even hurt the byb'rs who are in it for the $$$$$$$. Just the reputable show/exhibitor breeders that already put every dime into this breed or their breed of choice. I understand that we need to do something about the mills and byb'rs, but mandatory spay/nueter is not the answer. Do you know how many dogs will be brought to the pound or just left out in the desert if this goes into effect??? All, of course will not be adopted and be euthanized and the ones left in the desert will die a slow dehydrated death. And, where is the $$$$$$ for the new breeder fees going to go?? How many jillions of tax $$ are they going to need to enforce this? Sorry, My Fair Lacy, I cant agree with you on this one. |

I do agree that much more needs to be done to put puppymills out of business...much much more...this law wouldn't solve this. The government needs to take dog breeding out from under USDA regulations...dogs should not be treated like livestock. I do think this law would cut down on the smaller backyard breeders and irresponsible owners that have accidental litters. It's a good start...not a solution to all breeding problems...but I dont think it can hurt. |
Even if you offer free spay/neuter clinics, most people would not go. People just dont like to be told what to do, how to do it, or how high to jump. If this bill went into effect, there are ALOT of pet owners that already cant afford or will not have their pets fixed. To avoid inspections and fines, they will dump their dogs/cats into the desert to fend for themselves or just dump them out on the street or take them to the pound. We are probably talking about thousands of dogs and cats. The Greyhound breeders/racers have already proven this in this state. If the dogs cant run or make a profit, out to the desert they go. Most were shot and the ears with the ID's cut off. Its the same with Easter bunnies and chicks. When the little kids get bored with them and wont take care of them, out to the desert they go. Its not so bad this time of year, but in May, the temps go to 100 plus and there is no standing water to be found. Alot of breeders do think of breeding dogs is just like livestock, only you can keep dogs and cats in the city. I know one breeder that if her dogs need a c-section, she will just slit their throats instead of incurring a vet bill. I think this is just a governmental ploy to get in on the cash cow of raising dogs. Same thing with the NAIS program. The government wants to know how many chickens, ducks, horses, cows, goats, etc you have on your place. The government wants to keep track of that animal for its lifetime. they want to know when you bought it, who you sold it to, and for how much. Ok, enough rant about the government!!! LOL But, I dont want to go and beg to get qualified to get a breeding license and I dont want inspections period!! I dont mind AkC inspections, but please, enough is enough. I dont like to be told how high to jump either. |
Yorkiekist, you bring up a good point about the taxes. Also, if they do offer more free or low cost spay/nueter clinics, that'll bring tax dollars up even more because I'm sure not all vets would be volunteering there time for it. Also, people will still find ways to avoid it. I think it sounds like a good idea, but there are so many flaws, like how the bybs and mills will get around, but reputable breeders won't. |
I think we should "volunteer" My Fair Lacy to do all the free spay/neuter clinics!!!!! LOL :) :) Its a shame when big government always wants to ram things down your throat. The mills wont be effected as they are not in Az and the pet stores will keep selling with no problems as they already have business licenses. The Byb'rs make so much money that it wont hurt them in the pocketbook too bad but I bet they wont like inspections!!! |

I'm always one to complain about taxes...I think the amount of taxes people pay is rediculous and are sometimes used for unnecessary things....but I'd much rather pay taxes to help control the pet population than throw my money away to people on welfare and some of the other stupid things our government chooses to spend our money on. |
You go girl!! You will be one of the few women vets I like!!!!!!!!!!:) |

Wow :) I did not realize that 75% of vet students are women. That's great! |

Haha!! :) That's pretty funny!! |
I also agree that this bill should be voted down. After all, how many small show breeders wind up putting their puppies in shelters? In my area, the shelter rarely has any puppies but only adult dogs. The biggest problem seems to actually be with the cats and even those are usually adults. I think we would be better off spending the money screening people or educating people on how to be good owners instead of limiting people. Maybe provide some free spay/neuter clinics and give a little incentive to them. But there will always be irresponsible people out there and I don't see how this law is going to somehow make those irresponsible or downright dishonest people obey the law. Puppymillers will still breed their dogs like always, and for them it's much more cost effective when you are having the same female and breeding her on every cycle. I think it's only going to affect those that already do the right thing and most of them already spay and neuter their pets or breed responsibly. Yes, there are always exceptions to the rule but I think the law will wind up forcing prices up on the sale of dogs and the end result will be that people will be forced to go to puppymills or pet stores in order to be able to afford one at all. Is that what we really want? :( |
Good point TJDMom!!! I was thinking about that earlier today. Also, if there is a mandatory spay/neuter, I can just see the prices of spay/neuter going up because the pet buyers will have no choice and have to get it done. I would think the vets would be against this bill also as they make the most money on breeder clients. Also, Petsmart, Petco, and the mailorder companies bank on mostly breeders to buy their products. I would think that they would want to protest this as well. And who will do the "critique" to decide if you are a show kennel and which dogs will be required to be spayed/neutered? It probably wont be the AKC or an AKC judge, it will be some fool that doesnt know zip about the breed he/she is looking at. The only ones that will be laughing all the way to the bank are the pet stores. Everyone will be forced to buy from them and they can jack those prices up even further. Well, hopefully all the kennel clubs and breeders will get together and fight this. If it can pass in LA, and then pass here, this fire will just keep on spreading. |
You are right -I'm here in AZ and will help fight it any way I can. |
Ok, Arizonans: go to Az Bill 2516 on the computer. The AKC website has a sample letter and the names, addresses, e-mails of all the Az state representatives. PLEASE lets write to them!!!!!! Get together with all your friends, kennel clubs, breed groups and bombard them with e-mails and letters!!!! This same bill is being introduced in new Mexico and Texas as well as other states. Lets stop this wild fire!!!!!!!!! |
These bills usually get voted down, so there is hope for all of you in AZ.:) Every other week it seems like one state or another is trying to pass these laws. Don't they have anything better to do? There are people committing crimes and running free. Why don't they spend their time worrying about that instead? And guess who will pay from these "free" spay/neuter clinics...tax payers. Surgery isn't cheap. Surgery is a medical decision between you and your dog's vet, not the government. What if the government told you that your child had to have a surgery that you didn't want them to have? I think just about everyone here would have an ever living fit. There is absolutely no difference between the two. |
I am totally against this as well. I few weeks back I posted a thread on the California mandatory spay/neuter bill that they are trying to pass. While this is intended for the California legislation, I have a feeling that most of the points will remain applicable. Here is my argument against this law and the reasons why I am against it. Many cities in Texas have been fighting these same issues- this is sweeping the US and I believe actually was passed last year in some Kentucky cities. I think there is more to this than we realize, a bigger agenda on some organization's part? below are links to info about these type bills http://www.responsiblepetowners.org/ http://www.responsiblepetowners.org/...on_alerts.html |
I know parts of this bill did get passed in Texas also- I just haven't found the revision version of the bill |
