Question about x-raying & c-sections I see on here that many breeders x-ray their females that are expecting. I have never done this and I have been very fortunate that I have only had one c-section in 10 years of breeding. That female was 5 lbs and had a single puppy in her. Fortunately, mom and baby were o.k. My question is how do you handle the pregnancy if the bitch is x-rayed and the vet says she needs a c-section? Do you wait until the labor starts or take her in right before you think the puppies are due? I know a lady once that always x-rayed her females. One time the vet said one of their females would need a c-section but when he preformed the c-section the puppies were all preemies and they all died. They were way off on her due date. I would appreciate some input on how some of you handle this situation. |
I would never suggest pre-planning a c-section unless the vet is absolute something is wrong with the pups and or the mom is at risk. Most vets will not do a section unless labor has begun. |

The X-rays can be deceiving. I feel that it's always best to try to let her have the puppy naturally. Then, if you run into problems head for the c-section. Keep the vet on alert, but let her try. |

Thank you all for your input. It seems that we are all in agreement. I really think that the one lady I knew that was scheduling c-sections was just trying to save money by not having it done after hours and doing it for the convenience of her vet and not for the welfare of her dogs. |
We don't pre plan for c-sections, my vet and I like to allow my girls to try to have them first and go from there. |
The vet I worked for only liked to do c-sections once labor had started. He said he's known of too many instances where the breeders were off on the due date and the puppies were premature. |

The only scheduled c-section that I know of was done on my friend's Bulldog. Another friend's bitch was almost a week overdue and went ahead and did the c-section before labor...all pups were fine. As the norm, though, I do not think that it is necessary unless the vet feels that something is definitely wrong with the bitch. JMO |
