Mom rejecting pups after having tails docked??? I had my five day old pup's tails docked and dew claws removed today. Ever since we have gotten home, their momma has not really been paying very much attention to them. She wants to be in my lap and won't lay down with them. They have been crying pretty much nonstop ever since they had this done. How long are they usually fussy afterwards? Is she rejecting them or is she just confused? |
I dont know a whole heck of alot about this but what about forcing mom to lay down and putting the puppies on her teats..maybe that will jog her memory as to what she should be doing..pups must be getting hungry.. Dawn |
I have no idea what you should do.. poor puppies (maybe just can't talk their crying anymore.. j/k) OR she doesn't want to hurt them:confused: |
Hmmmmm, haven't heard of that happening before but I'd sure be putting those pups to her teats so they can eat. She's not being mean to them or anything is she? If not, I would make sure those pups get latched onto her for food....if not in their whelping box....even on your lap if you have to until things get back to normal. |
When I dock my puppies tails there is very little crying. After 30 minutes they are quiet and settled down. That is why I do my own tails and dewclaws....it is very stressful on the mom and the puppies going to the vets. Are the puppies crying because they are hungry? Does the mom have plenty of milk to keep them satisfied? When the pups are that age the mom will not want to stay right with the pups. I let my moms come in the living room with me when they want too and they let me know when they want back in with the pups. Make sure the puppies are warm also. |
I have never had this happen before either...Our pups just whine for a small amount of time and mom settles in right away with them... Are you taking mom's temp?...Sometimes when moms are not feeling well they will be antsy and not want to pay attention to the babies...That is one of the first signs of Eclampsia...Hope momma gets back in that box and gets back to bussiness! ~Laura |
Sleepless night... Well I didn't get much sleep last night. I don't know what is going on with the momma dog. I kept having to move the pups closer to her because she was taking the blanket and laying on it and leaving the pups in the back of the cage with nothing to lay on. She also kept laying on them. I pretty much had to force her to nurse them and lay anywhere near them. She was not acting like this at ALL before they had their tails docked. She also keeps digging around at everything, even when she is not with the pups. She peed on my bed, which baffles me because she never does that. I don't know what is going on but I am going to call the vet. |
Take the mothers temperature. She may be sick. Is she eating? The pups should be on a heating pad. It sound like she need to see the vet immediately. Please keep us posted. |

I took her temp and it is fine. She is eating and drinking just fine as well. She does not act sick at all. I have placed a call to the vet and I am waiting for a call back. |
Do you have a heating pad in the box for the puppies to crawl on if they are cold? They will cry alot if they are cold or hungry. Tie the corners of the cover to the bed area so that Mom cannot dig it out from under them or on top of them. The heating pad needs to have a cover on it and set on low also. Do you have a cover over thier area? They need to be kept out of drafts too. |

mom and pups [I]You might try putting the pups in your lap with the Mom. If she's real close to you, I mean your Buddy, she feels a tug between you and her pups so being together helps her with the either or problem. You shouldn't have to do this all the time just once or twice. Looking forward to hearing how this comes out. |
Maybe try and put some vicks on the moms nose so everything smells the same. I had to do this to a mommy bunny one time when we had to take her and her babies out of the cage when a hurricane was approaching. We knew she may reject her babies if they smelled different. Those babies really need their mom, so maybe hold her and the babies so they can nurse. |
