We had a scare last night We were up all night Friday night delivering a litter. I took the moms temperature yesterday afternoon and all was normal. I alway do this to make sure mom is not getting any infection. Last night, I got up at 12:30 to check on everyone and the mom was out of her whelping box and panting very hard. I took her temperature and it was 105.7. I immediately knew she was in trouble. I mixed up some amoxicilin and gave her a dose. I was getting ready to call the vets and she started pushing very, very hard. I saw a foot sticking out and after a little work she passed a dead pup. I felt so bad but also relieved. I gave the mom some K-9 Bluelite solution. She passed lots more black gunk (placenta) and seemed to be settling down. I had another mom that had two one week old pups and she had plenty of milk so I put the sick moms pups with her (she was thrilled to have more babies to look after). Needless to say, I was exhausted after being up all night the night before. After I felt the situation was under control I went to bed about 1:30. I woke up at 4 a.m to check on mom again. Her temperature had dropped to 104.1 and she seemed to be doing well and her pups that were with the other mom were all fine. I went back to bed and slept untl 6:30 this morning. I took moms temperature and it was down to 102.1 so I think we will be o.k. The mom ate well and around 9:30 I pup her pups back with her. I will have to continue to monitor the situation but I think everything will be o.k. |

It is better safe than sorry especially with the big litter. If may save you money in the long run if there is anything going on to catch it ASAP. I would rather get a vets opinion then to just rely on looking at her and saying she is o.k. even though the temp has droped. she may need somthing stronger jmo. I hope she does better!! |
Wow good job Nurse!! |
Wow....how scary Not JUST a retained placenta....but a puppy? Is this common??? (Question for other breeders here.) I learn something new on YorkieTalk every day! So now I know that counting placentas isnt a sure thing that all is well. Glad mama is doing better and pups are back with her and doing well also.:aimeeyork Hope you get a good nights rest soon <smile> |

Thank you for your well wishes. |
whelping This is why an xray before whelping and shot of oxyie after to clean them out works for my girls.. I would still be concnerned with any temp 103 and higher... |

Mom and babies are doing well. Thanks for your concerns. I hope your daughter has good luck with her lab. Now that will be a real job taking care of Lab puppies. |

i normally do not get x rays on my proven females but any having their first litter, it is a MUST that i have them xray'd also, i ALWAYS get the oxy shot. |

I am just curious....when you have female x-rayed do you have the vet very often come back and say the mom cannot deliver the pups and then what do you do? Do you wait until she goes into labor and then take the pups or take them when you think they are due? I know a lady that always had her Yorkie moms x-rayed and the vet always told her they would need a c-section. One time they were off on their dates and the vet did the c-section too early and the pups all died. In 10 years of breeding I have only had to have one c-section because that mom had one big pup in her and fortunately everything turned out well. I have used the Oxy shot in the past but not always. In the case of this female I think the pup was in sideways in the birth canal and had I given her an Oxy shot it could have ruptured her uterus. From my experience and from what I have read the suckling of the pups stimulates the uterus and that helps it to contract and remove the afterbirth. I also had a female that had a very bad reaction to a Oxy shot so I am just paranoid about them now. I guess we all have our reasons for doing or not doing things. I do appreciate your thoughts and you input. We can all learn from each others experiences. |
I would never get the Oxy shot, unless she NEEDED it. I have heard so much bad things about it, but to each his/her own. |

Measured her pelvis and size of puppies is good. No problems expected. SIL made whelping box today and shes in it ,as vet said litter may come a couple days early due to the size . She has champions in her line for all 3 generations back. I have 4 grandson who are so excited. My duaghter is a nurse but insists I have to be there. Which I find so funny Hope mama is doing even better today, and that you get some much needed sleep. |
