puppies?? Abby's babies are now 3 1/1 wks. old and I was wondering when do you guys remove the heating pad from the whelping bed and begin to let the room become more of a normal temp. The babies are in our bathroom and I have had a small heater keeping it around 78-80 in there. I was thinking about moving them down stairs at 4 weeks, but the room is open they will be in and will not be able to keep really warm. Should I just wait and keep them in the bathroom or will they be able to take the cooler room? Also, how do you keep their beds clean? They seem to pee tremendous amounts. Each morning I clean their bed and the news paper that is under their bedding is usually soaked. I started putting a pee pad at one end and that does help as they seem to go there sometimes to do their business, but not always. Should I take down the barrier that keeps them in the whelping bed and put a pen up so they have a confined area to move about in? Any suggestion would help. Thanks so much Deb:confused: |
Mine will be 4 week tomorrow. I moved mine to the living room in a Xpen a couple days ago. I took them out of the whelping box and use a small puppy bed they can get in and out of. I put pee pads around the bed and they get out of there bed and go do their business. I have only have a few accidents but never soaked. I also get them up a couple times a day and sit them on the pee pads. Most of the time when they wake they pee. |
1 Attachment(s) During the winter I keep the heating pad until they are about 3 weeks old. At 3 1/2 to 4 weeks I remove the whelping box and put them in an x-pen in my spare bedroom. I have a board with with legs for support (see picture) that my husband made that I put across one end of the x-pen. That way the moma can go hop over the board to see her babies and also she can get away from them when she wants to. I put their bedding at one end, their food and water in the middle and they go pee on pads at the other end. Usually the pups won't climb over the board until they are 7 or 8 weeks old. |

Thanks for the idea of the board. Mine are getting out of the pen and I was wondering what I could do. |
How warm is the room that the puppies are in? We keep the house around 68.Will this be too cold for them? The idea of the board is great. I will see if I can get my husband to make one. How tall is the board? Thanks Deb |

I keep the pups on a heating pad plus I keep the room about 76 to 78 degrees. |
