Is 3 Weeks Early For Potty Training? I am curious as to if most Yorkies pretty much potty train themselves with the pee pad? As soon as Holly could walk around on her own, around 3 weeks, I put a peed pad out for her. EVERY SINGLE TIME that she needs to pee she will find that pee pad and go potty and poop on it! She never goes anywhere else. I don't have to clean ANY messes up. Is this common? Just curious. Even if it is common I think that she is one smart pup!!:D |
Most Yorkie pups will crawl away from their nest to do their business when they are about that age. They are smart little babies. |

I start with paper training litterly day 1. All my puppies were pee pad trained when they went to their permanent homes. Some of them even learned the doggie door--but not at this time of year--it is cold at night and early morning for little puppies. |
Mine are doing it too.. amazing... |
my 8 wk old litter figured it out all on their own! i was so proud! i just put a pee pad out and within a few minutes they had discovered it and used it! now they do soo well with using them! im so proud! |
Yes, it just amazes me how smart they are and how quickly they do what they should be! It is too cold out here in California for my pup to be out for very long. She is 6 weeks old today. Yesterday was the first time that I had her outside and she loved it! I have a dog run set up in the house for the dogs that leads to a doggy door. Holly, our six week old pup, is the only one that can't quite use it(she tries to though!) Two days ago she followed right under one of my other Yorkies and got out though! I need to keep a close eye on her!:animal-pa |
Your pup is extremely young and I would not take a 6 week old pup outside yet...Although the weather may be perfect she is not yet vaccinated properly to protect her from serious diseases such as Parvo...To contract Parvo all they need to do is walk where a dog with Parvo once walked...Parvo lives in the ground for a full year and that is what makes it so contagious! ~Laura |

I have had really good experiences with pee pads. Till this last puppy. She will go on the pee pad and sometimes miss it by a little and I have to clean it up. But she refuses to poop on the pad. Now she seems to think its a place for her to lay on as a rug or blanket or something. Not sure what she thinks she is doing. She will hold it and I will have to work and work with her to go and pee now on the pad. I sometimes take her to another room and she will use the pee pad there. I'm wondering if she thinks that whole room is hers and she doesn't even want to use the pee pad? Sounds like your little one is very smart. |
Potty training I always start taking my pups outside to potty train at 5 weeks. I've never had one become ill, my yard is private and yes I know Parvo is airborne. I try to prevent them from going in their crate. I've taught Obedience training in the past. By teaching them to use potty papers in ones home they are learning that it is ok to potty in the home, they are also learning to go when they want to go rather than when you want them to go. |
