Breeding my Girl - Help Hello I am trying to breed my Candy, she is in her 3rd heat now (3rd day bleeding), this is my first time and have the following questions: 1. Candy is about 4 lbs and my male Shadow is about 6 lbs, can I use Shadow as the stud, will he be too big? 2. Do I have to seperate them now untill the 10th days of bleeding? 3. Shadow has never been a stud and how do I assist him when is time? Any help will be apprecated. Thank you very much in advance. Jen:) |
1. usually the female is soposse to be bigger then the male 2. look at debbie jensen's she has info about it on her website http://debbiejensen.com |
breeding The sire does not need to be smaller then the dam, of course you do not want to use an oversized male with anything. I would go into the archives and read all you can....you may PM me if you have a question. Bet wishes |
Hi Jen, Do you know much about the size of Shadow's line? If his parents and others are small it should be ok to use him, but if not you might want to consider another male. But use the same idea with the stud if you use one - if he's parents and others were large you might want to choose another. I would keep the two seperated until the 10th day and also when you're not around if you're not already Most people find it best to hold the female and have the male come over. Make sure when he starts to come out that he's inside her or pull him off her. Good luck :) |

Hello I am trying to breed my Candy, she is in her 3rd heat now (3rd day bleeding), this is my first time and have the following questions: 1. Candy is about 4 lbs and my male Shadow is about 6 lbs, can I use Shadow as the stud, will he be too big? I don't recommend it but i have had a bigger male with a smaller female before.....the babies are still the same size or very, very close. I also recommend having her hips xrayed at 50 days of pregnancy to see if they are wide enough to deliver puppies or if they need to schedual a c-section 2. Do I have to seperate them now untill the 10th days of bleeding? There in heat a week comming in a week in and a week going out. I start around day 8 of heat cycle and see if she willl except him yet. If so...and they tie(get stuck) then you are pretty sure babies are comming 60-63 days later 3. Shadow has never been a stud and how do I assist him when is time? I don't assist unless needed....if she is in heat he will be ready...if she is ready to let him....make sure they are in a place where they cant jump on anyting or steps so on so no one gets hurts....its common for them to turn while stck and be rear end to rear end....but if you want to try to help them see if she is ready to axcept one her own first Any help will be apprecated. Thank you very much in advance. keep in touch like to know if babies are comming. my email is triciahaug@yahoo.com tricia |
I know, you're supposed to take the female to the male to breed, not vice versa. My old vet has a very good website, a lot of info. on there on breeding it's www.animalpetdoctor.com |
Four pounds is usually too small. Make sure you measure her pernium and pelvis to make sure that she is large enough to free whelp. Small bitches can also be prone to eclampsia especially with larger litters so make sure you know all the early signs for that. |
Shadow's parent are small, that way I bought him thinking he will be the same or similar size to Candy. But....he actually got bigger than her.... |
