Looking to buy a Yorkie This will be my first time buying a yorkie, and I'm having a hard time finding them in my area. When I find one what should I look for? |
it depends on what YOU are looking for in the first place....... is he strictly pet? or were you going to show/ breed him or her? DO you live in teh kind of household that can work with a teeny yorkie or are you the kind of household that wants a larger yorkie that is less of a "stepping on" hazard? When you figure out what you want.....take youre time and look around for breeders in your area..... you can look in teh newspaper, the pennysaver, the internet...... if talking to a breeders and you feel uncomfortable at any time about the interaction DONT BUY A PUPPY FROM THEM, some breeders will take advantage of you and not bat an eye, you should take your time in looking to get the best price you can get as well as teh best puppy you can get, getting the first puppy you look at isnt really the way to go... Beware of puppies that are lathargic, have a cough, "hand shy"..... if you do a search online, there are plenty of sites on "temperment testing" ..... look inside the puppies mouth to see if teh gums are pink (that is a good sign of a healthy pup)..... i if you are looking for a smaller yorkie, be aware of any potential vet costs may be associated with them, sometimes breeders misrepresent the breed and sell what they call "teacups" which in actuality are just runts or undersized yorkies..... sometimes (many people on this site have smaller yorkies and have had NO problems, but, just keep this in mind as a precaution) the smaller the yorkies can be unhealthy, they can have hypoglycemia and other medical problems as well as be VERY fragile..... lol......... now after this plethora of info, what kind of yorkie are you looking for? |
I'm looking for a healthy one!! :) I'm not going to breed it or show it. I have a big house and a big fenced in back yard. I had a toy poodle that recently passed away. (Missy was 14yrs old) So I just want an average sized one. About how much would an average one cost? |
if you look for one of the "larger" yorkies...... they are around 7+ lbs......... my toby is going to be around that weight.... i think they are soooo much easier because i dont feel like i am going to break him as easy......lol..... i've taken care of one of those so called "teacups" and it was a little scary.... toy sized is 4-7 lbs..... and the teeny ones are under 4 lbs (these are the ones you have to be REALLY careful with hypoglycemia) If you arent looking to breed or show i would suggest you look for one that is not papered..... you might want to call around to any breeders in youre area and ask for any "pet quality" yorkies and their pricing...... price varies on where you live, i live in southern california and teh average here is about $800- 3000........ but i got my toby for $500 because he was "larger" and he had floppy ears |
I hope they are cheaper here in TN. I also looked at addopting one from a rescue. I know there is one in Crossville Tn ( I think). Thanks so much for the Info, it has been a lot of help. I'm going to start calling places tomorrow. :D |
good luck, and keep me posted, im curious as to how much they are in other states as opposed to "hip trendy and overly priced" california |
just out of curiosity.......... how much did you want to spend? |
lol I will! :) |
how much did you want to spend? and what is the average price there (if youve done any research).......... i spent a good month cruising this site, learning about the breed, before i got mine..... i wanted to know EVERYTHING i could beforehand....... but then its like having a baby, you never end up learning enough :p |
have you had any luck yet??? |
