Need some help! My Lilly had her first litter on Saturday. Bell her mother, who has had three litters in the past wants in with Lilly's babies. Bell always let Lilly help her out with her litters. Lilly is attacking Bell if she comes with in a few feet of her babies. But this only happens sometimes, Other then keeping them separated, any other suggestions?? Poor Bell is lost with her Lilly and since she knows there are babies in the house, I guess she is feeling just lost!:( |
Awe, poor thing. Perhaps Lilly's had enough of sharing her puppies. Maybe a stuffed animal would be comforting. Sorry, not much help in this area as mine are always seperated. I know most times females will go after one another when it comes to babies. And sometimes they'll even go after the babies. |
The new mama will snarl and attack any other dog that comes close to her babies. She is in protection mode. AND something you may not know but the other dog that wants in with the new babies, could kill every one of them. I would NOT let the other female anywhere near my babies. I would keep them totally separated . I don't ever let any other dogs, especially females, around my puppies until they are eight or nine weeks old when I start introducing them to the "big dog" room. |
You definitely need to keep Bell away from Lilly. I would not risk them getting into a fight over the puppies. Maybe you can give Bell a little extra attention so she won't feel so lonely. |
I want to thank you for your insight. I really don't think either one of my girls would hurt any babies. I know this might sound naive but I think I know my girls and I don't think that is the problem. I think (and I know I could be wrong) Bell wants to be mommy too! She was always such a good mom. But for now I will listen to your concerns and keep them apart. |
Karen, Lexie would allow Davie by her puppies but when Davie had puppies we actually had to put Davie and her 3 in the guest bedroom she was so protective of them for the first month. I know how close Bell and Lilly are, so I really feel for Bell. I think Lilly will get better, we just need to let the puppies get a little older and hope Lilly lightens up!! See you at school! puppies Best wishes with your litter...we never think these wonderful darlings will hurt any puppies...believe me they revert to the "animals" they are without notice and for what reason we never figure out except they are animals... that is why people are so puzzled when the gently, "never bitten anyone" family dog tries to eat the neighbors kid......always better safe then sorry. |
