Many breeders sell with limited registration because they do not want the dog bred for what ever reason. Show breeders do this to protect their bloodline and to keep an undersized or oversized or otherwise faulty puppy from being bred and its offspring ending up in the show ring by a unknowledgeable breeder. Many breeders sell the puppies at 12 weeks old and that is too young to have them spayed already. You can register any AKC dog with CKC or any of the registries if you have the AKC numbers of the parent. AKC is not too expensive considering all they do to protect the breeds. It just costs about $35 to get the litter registrations on a litter of 5. If you use a male for breeding more than 3 times in a year or 5 times lifetime then you have to pay $35 for a DNA kit so AKC will have the sires DNA on file. If you have more than 6 or 7 litters in a year then you can expect a visit from AKC and they will do a check on your breeding facilities. They check your breeding records and do spot DNA testing on any litters that you may have at that time.
Now, it is a total cop out to say that AKC charges too much. The truth of the matter is that some people change their dogs from AKC to other registries is because either they just want to breed their dog anyway (with limited registration you cannot register litter that dog may have with AKC), or as in many cases you have a puppy mill or unreputable breeder that does not or cannot use AKC because they do not want to be inspected, they have things to hide.
I must add that there are some reputable breeders that use other registries so as in any case when you buy a puppy you should check out everything. Generally, puppies that are not AKC are cheaper. If you are just looking for a pet it does not matter about the registry as long as they parents are good representatives of the breed and the breeder is knowledgeable. Do your homework. If you are not planning on breeding then it is a plus that a breeder is selling their pups with limited registration.
I might add that many reputable breeders withhold the papers totally until proof is provided that the puppy has been spayed or neutered. Buy doing this it can in some cases keep people from registering with other registries but it is very easy to get the AKC number on any dog if you know its registered name. |
