How much formula to feed 1.7oz pup My bubble's is having her pups. She had two right together and boy was 3 oz and girl is 1.7. , and a nice healthy 4 oz girl thats already nursing. Little tiny girl is so small and skinny ( I have never had a pup that size in 5 yrs) She is breathing fine and I've got her warm on a heat pad with her brother. I know there is now way she could latch on to the nipple. I fed about 4 drops of formula and none came out the nose, and it went down ok as far as I can tell. How many drops, and how often should I feed? I don't want to drown her, so if I'm doing it by drop how many and how often? I'm giving brother some too. thanks so much ! |
I thought you was saying a 1 .7 lbs . LOL I was think man thats a huge pup, But got it a 1.7oz, wow thats very small. Im no help because Im not sure what to feed a baby that small. I think I would just guess and feed until I saw a round full tummy, I would also give nutri drops. BUt I hope someone else comes on and helps you someone that has had a small baby like this. GL with your babies and Momma. |
I would feed her about 1 cc every two hours , I don't know how many drops that would be , but I would be tube feeding her. Maybe you could count out the drops in a cc and go from there. |
She is still hanging in there but so tiny and weak. I am using a 1 cc tiny syringe. She'll only take about 1/2cc , so I'm doing it about every hr. Poor baby , she wants to live, so I will be sleepless in MN. ;) I don't know how to tube and when I asked my friend thats a breeder, she said it makes their throat sore and then they don't want to nurse. The tube would have to be the size of a tooth pick to fit in her tiny mouth. If she's not doing better tomorrow, I think I'll take her into the vet and see if they can show me how. I should have just said 1 oz. It looks like 1 lb 7 oz. |
I hope she is doing better.. |
If she is that weak, you shouldnt wait until tomorrow. They do make pretty small tubes and at this point making her throat sore is the least of her worries. Good luck and I hope she does better soon. |
Hi just wanting to know how the tiny one is doing today. |
I've not found that to be true about tubefeeding. It gives them instant nutrition without them expelling the energy. They'll get stronger to eat day by day. It doesn't sound like she's nursing now anyways. I put mine on the teat before their feeding just to let them try (one I may put her/him on a few of times a day if I decide). Then a pup could be at the point that they're not with mom at all but in a warming box (esp. in a big litter). In my experience (only), pups can recover pretty well unless somethings wrong. Best Wishes for this baby |
This is a very interesting article about tube feeding and caring for a weak puppy. Has anyone here ever used this method of injecting saline solution under the skin? http://www.showdogsupersite.com/kenl...t/feeding.html |
2 Attachment(s) Here is my little baby. she is still at 1.5 -1.7 ounces. She is eating about 1 ml every 2-3 hrs but is not gaining weight. I can feel her belly get full and don't want to over feed and drown her. She is staying warm with mommy and her 2 siblings. I tried having her on her own heating pad but mom freaks out. I'm doing my best to keep her alive. I go to the vet tomorrow for tails and dews and might have them show me how to tube. I'm so scared I will get it down the wrong pipe. Please keep her in your prayers. |

Lactated ringers are very useful. I have them and have used them. Great for dehydration. |
I agree, the little should not have anything done. She's far too fragile. |

Well , she started crying yesterday and her body started getting cold. She passed away about 8pm. I never did she her pee or poop, even when I did the cotton ball wipe after feeding her. I don't know if something was wrong or if she was just to tiny and weak. I was feeding a formula I get from my vet called Pro-Biolac. It has colostrum, DHA, and micro organisms. Is made by Vet Solutions in TX. I hope this doesn't happen again, but if so , I will learn how to tube feed. She was eating by the syringe every 2 hrs, and I could feel her belly getting fuller so the formula was getting into her. For the future, how much do you feed a puppy of this size ? I followed the instructions and it was 1 ml -1.25 per feeding with 8 feedings. Does this sound right? With a homemade formula, how much do you feed? Is there a guideline like if the pup weighs this , you feed this amount? Tube or syringe. Thanks for your prayers, ideas and kind words. |
omg... I'm so sorry about your loss. :( |
:littleang I am so sorry for your loss... She was for sure a very very tiny little thing...:littleang |
I am so sorry she didnt make it. I go by the weight. Whatever they weigh, I feed them a little less than that so I do overfeed them. Maybe others do something else. |
