Genetic testing, which is most impt? As someone nearly done with research I'm curious which genetic tests the breeding YT's feel are most important. I know I definitely want to deal with a breeder who does bile acid tests for liver shunt but was curious(when looking for pet quality) if I should be particularly adamant about OFA certs or not. I'd love to hear opinions/info/suggestions... Thanks so much for taking the time to look at this, sorry if this is a constant repeat question. ;) |
Actually when buying a pet there really aren't that many genetic tests that are financially feasible. I would test for LP as the surgery is expensive and the condition can be very painful for your little friend. |
I would want a breeder who bile acid tests... |

tests A good bile acid result at 12/16 weeks does not mean a Yorkie is shunt free..so that is why a one year guarantee is needed..and repeat the test at 6 months. |

Agreed!!!!!!!! I don't know anyone that does bile acid tests on baby puppies before they leave. I have only HEARD of a couple. I don't mine . that's why I have a contract in place. AND, I got Ceeby at nine weeks. My vet refused to bile acid him at that age because of the fasting required. ceeby was bile acid tested at nine months old before he was old enough to breed. It's not that breeders can't afford to do it, as someone said, it's because it is unnecessary at a young age and can even give a false positive. |
I'd have to say bile acid tests! |
Thanks for all the responses so far! I didn't know about the timing for the bile test so that was great info for me. Reading up on some of these tests is different then practical knowledge which is extremely appreciated! I also read an older post on breeders on YT who were discussing OFA. That was insiteful as well. It's really invaluable for me to be able to get some knowledgeable info, so a big thanks to everyone posting  |
