When do you know? When do you know your girls are PG? Is there a particular sign or symptom that you always go by? :p Also, how soon can an ultrasound be done? I'm asking this one because there was a thread earlier in the general section about a 2 lb chi for sale who was supposedly pregnant, and the ad said she was due in 45 days and her ultrasound said she was having 2 or 3. Is that even possible??? :eek: |

If they only have one, it is sometimes very hard to tell. People on here have reported that even the vet said the girl wasn't pregnant and she delivered a day or two later. if you really want to know then I guess I'd do the ultrasound. |
Jmo Vets are wonderful inventions..but I, perfer to keep my Yorkies out the vet clinic as much as possible, pregnant or not. It is a bit like the hopsital for us humans..if you really want to get sick, go to the hopsital, infections, etc.. Sometimes, they barf around 2 or 3 weeks...but I know by 5 1/2 with mine, that seems to be the magic number. |

It can be a guessing game alright... I try not to look closely at their belly every day...a slow change is not as noticable. At 5 weeks many have no visible signs, then as a rule, 3 to 4 days later they swell up quite large over night it seems. Many have a clear discharge at this point, others wait a longer...I treat all bred females like they are pregnant, until proven otherwise...I have had so very few to miss over the years, I just take it for granted they are...they have what I call "milk ridges" along the nipples, they are plump and run the length of the belly..much like a veggie plants in a garden.. I have found a bitch who has had pups once or more times tend to show quicker..I think it may be due to the muscles not having the same tone to hold the belly/uterus tight to the body...but that is just my theory, certainly not a science... |
I palpate our girls at 28 days...this always gives us a good idea also of when they will be due...usually can tell if they will be a couple days early or late by the size of the fetuses when I palpate. It take a gentle hand...and would recommend having someone teach you rather than just trying it! ;) |
2 Attachment(s) I just confirmed recently that Brooklyn is pregnant, and she definitely has the "milk ridges" (you can sort of see them in these pictures). She has also gained 1/2 a lb, her abdomen is very tight and she's starting to show just a little...:p She's around 25 days. I don't know how big she'll be but it's looking like it's going to be HUGE...she had 6 her last litter...:D |
