age and weight to breed this is my first time owning a yorkie and i have been reading alot about them and what to expect...belle is 3 months right now and about 2.5lbs...i have read some article that you shouldnt breed until there at least 2 years of age and alot bigger...im not in a rush to breed her right now cause she is still a pup...i just wanted to get some info in regards to this so i know when the right time would be...i dont want to have her health at risk...so any input in regards to this would be very helpful...thanks |
Just wanted to welcome you to YT and say good luck. There are a lot of good breeders on here with tons of information and they will be able to lead you in the right direction. |
Welcome! You should not breed before 18 months or more and then a complete check up should be done to see if the girl is large enough to breed. They may weigh enough but have a small repoductive system and only a vet can tell. My Chelsey was to small even at over 4 lbs. To breed her would have put her life at risk so we had her fixed. |
thank you yea i knew she had to be at least around that age and when she is ready i will definitely take her to the vets to get her checked out thanks for the help. cheryl |
Brreding should be done until at least 18 months old. Aside from being emotionally and physically ready to breed, it will be at least until then before you know if she even should be bred. You cannot tell aat 3 months if the dog will possess qualities as an adult that should be passed on to future generations--even if the parents were perfect representations of the breed. Her size is important--I personally would never breed a female under 5 pounds to err on the side of caution. In addition, her size is only have of what you have to consider--the size of the dogs in her line is equally as important. |
