Worried about 9 day old pup
 
Hi,
We had puppies on New Years Day. The 3 of them were of normal weight, about 3.5oz to 4oz. The little gut was only 2oz, he dropped down to 1.8 after the first day. He is now about 2.5-2.6oz. he keeps going back and fourth. The others are alot bigger 6.8oz,7.5oz,9.1oz. I am trying to feed him every 2 hours and even tried supplement, which he hates and I have to force him to get a few drops. Is there anything I can do or any supplement that is high is calorie or something I can give the mom. She is small to about 5 pounds. Has anyone had such a little pup and they lived this long being so small. He seems to sleep alot and gets full fast. If anyone has any suggestions I would love them. I hate to even leave the house because I worry so much he wont make it. Please help....

Maybe have someone teach you how to tube feed or try the fading puppy broth posted in the sticky in the breeders area I think. Keep it warm at all times. Dont wait too long if you feel you are losing ground. It maybe need to be tubed.

I had to supplement Little Bit, All the other pups were much bigger than he was and he just didn't have a chance to eat like they did. We had (7) He had trouble holding on to nurse. I gave him time alone with mom to nurse then would always follow up with a bottle. I used an eye dropper at first. I didn't like using it because I felt the milk went down too fast. I bought several bottle nipples and kept working with sizing the nipples until I got the best size hole. I cut the hole with very small scissors in the shape of a x. He did fill up very fast. It didn't take much at first. They are so small. I also made sure that the milk was just the right temp. He is now 11 weeks and 2 lbs. But I have to tell you I didn't leave him too much either. :animal36 Oh and prepare yourself to really bond with this one, I did. I had no intentions on keeping another puppy but there is no way that I can part with him now!

Have you checked his palate for a cleft?
Do you feed him around the clock?
Does he cry, feel warm?
I would tube or bottle feed on a regular basis and help him nurse off mom, by puttign the others away for a few minutes...or use your hands on either side of him to make a boundary where the others can not bother him for a few minutes to suckle.
