I came across some of my Bella's delivery pix of her babies, I thought it would be nice to share. I know I wished I wouldve actually saw what I wouldve seen beforehand!:eek:

Anyways, here are some of her having some puppies:

She had 3, 2F 1M and they are 1 1/2 years old and causing havoc!!

I always help mine, never even leave them the week before due date.

If by 'help' you mean supervise and fill in as far as breaking sacks, cutting cords, etc. Then "YES." It is not at all advised to just "let nature take it's course" in regards to a whelp....or the actuallly tie for that matter.

Do you have photo's of the "one dry leg" or "oversized, fat head, pup that refuses to budge...those are particularly interesting...I like the ones where the head comes out and turns like that Exocist girls head...oh, and two trying to come at once is exciting also...LOL

Ah, my very first 'on my own' pups were battling to the finish line and both popped out with one mighty push.:eek: So good to have an extra set of hands around when you need them.:p

I'd never found a good term to describe those head first young'uns, but 'Exorcist' seems fitting.:D

Here's a link to a site I found. I'm not for sure, but I think this may be a website from a fellow YTer. Anyway, it shows a maltese giving birth with all those things you mentioned above.

OMG OMG OMG ... I think I'm going to faint!! I'm such a big chicken when it comes to stuff like this. I went to the website showing a Maltese giving birth and I almost passed out lolol :D I'm such a baby lol :p

Wow! That was wonderful!!! I just have one question...why isn't the person assisting the delivery using latex gloves? Wouldn't it be more sanitary for the bitch and babies? Not to mention the "mess" on your hands! I was just wondering! :p

PS. Never mind! I thought you knew the person assisting.

I just had to come back and say this ... seeing the babies AFTER they are born and all cleaned up is just amazing. They're so beautiful and tiny and just perfect. What a blessing that is!! I personally could never be a breeder because I'd pass out cold on the floor LOL but I think all true breeders who love their dogs are just amazing people. It really takes a special person to breed with love.

Puppies live in a bacteria filled environment for 9 weeks before birth...that is why they are born with sealed eyes to prevent infections..the canine womb is no where near as sterile as the human womb...so latex glove are a moot point IMO....BUT I would always advise washing your hands in cold water after whelping...hot water won't get the green discharge off..it seems to make it worse...

Really? Wow, I didn't know that. Thanks for the info! I'm so used to BSI (body substance isolation) from being an EMT. LOL

I think that ad long as you wash your hands frequently during the birth it is ok to not wear gloves. If you can't stand getting a little "mess" on you, you aren't going to like breeding, LOL

As for the pics, it seems really clean! I always change the blsnkets after every other pup, yet I can't keep it that clean, haha.

Thanks, you guys I am glad you enjoyed those pix. I kinda knew you would when I stumbled upon them... :p

Anyways I always wear gloves when delivering the pups, to protect her and me. I assist her with everything, I wouldnt imagine leaving her alone to deliver them alone. :)

You DO NOT want to see or hear what I have picked up in my bare hands over the years I have bred and raised Yorkies...my MD told me recently that I have a really good immune system...I say a daily dose of germs is good for you..LOL
Nothing wrong with gloves if you want to use them..

Those are really good photo's and very helpful to the novice..thanks for posting.

I was at the Maltese site it was very interesting I have never experienced whelping. I seems to be so much work and very much worth it.
